New Metro game confirms reveal date

Next chapter in Subway series, Subway 2039was officially announced. This Subway the sequel will be published by Deep Silver and developed by 4A Games, like previous entries in the main series, and will be fully revealed during the Xbox First Look event on Thursday, April 16.

Based on the post-apocalyptic novel series by Dmitry Glukhovsky Subway the video game series debuted in March 2010 Subway 2033. At the head of 4A Games, a Ukrainian studio originally formed by several members STALKER development team, Subway the series has a total of three main entries, all of which revolve around the protagonist Artyom, one of the survivors of the 2013 nuclear war that devastated the surface of Moscow. Along with the core trilogy, Subway the series got a VR spinoff in November 2024 titled Awakening the subway.

On April 13, the social media accounts of 4A Games and Deep Silver suddenly announced the existence Subway 2039a game that is being touted as the “next chapter” of the franchise. This official announcement comes just days after leaker AlexandreNGamR took to X to claim the new Subway the game was supposed to be announced this week. While all rumors and leaks should always be taken with a grain of salt, it seems there was some truth to it.

Along with 4A Games and Deep Silver's social media announcements, the official Xbox X account also posted information about the newly revealed Subway 2039. Xbox announced this in its own post Subway 2039 It will receive its very own Xbox First Look video on YouTube on April 16th at 10:00am PT / 1:00pm ET. While there is little official information about the content of this upcoming showcase, the video's description on YouTube gives a brief description of what fans can expect from the next Subway payment. reads:

“A journey into the dark heart of post-apocalyptic Moscow in a harrowing conflict for the very soul of the metro”

This description is interesting, especially for those who played the last mainline entry in the series, Metro Exodus. Without spoiling anything major about the game, Metro Exodus sees players once again controlling Artyom, though instead of guiding the survivor through the tunnels of the Moscow Metro, they flee the city and venture into the wider world. Like its predecessors, Metro Exodus has several different endings that occur based on the player's actions in the game, but at least one of these endings could eventually lead to Artyom returning to Moscow. That said, it is currently not confirmed whether Subway 2039 will feature Artyom as the main character, or if it will start a whole new chapter in the story of the series.

The official description of the Xbox First Look: Metro 2039 YouTube video also confirms that the upcoming entry will be an Xbox Play Anywhere title. It is currently not confirmed whether Subway 2039 it will be available through Xbox Game Pass when it is eventually released.
