Helldivers 2 took the gaming community by storm for a variety of reasons. It's clear that the chaotic co-op gameplay and explosive battles against the Illuminate, Teriminids and Automatons played a role, as did the galactic map, attractive $40 price tag and consistent updates. Still, it's the game's humor that arguably played the biggest role in its success, as the fight for democracy across space resulted in brilliant marketing and even more brilliant memes. Now, a Steam game called Pax Autocratica aims to recapture that kind of magic while utilizing elements of the popular automation game Satisfactory.
Satisfactory it has all the automation staples down, but it goes one step further than connecting pipes and building factories. In addition to a hugely satisfying take on the genre's core mechanics, enhanced by great sound design and stunning graphics, there's an impressive open world to explore with rewarding exploration. Having something extra is what really sets it up Satisfactory except that in addition to borrowing the first-person perspective, Steam's Pax Autocratica tries to do through its roguelike FPS battles.

Pax Autocratica adopts the Helldivers style of humor, but with a satisfying depth
Helldivers it's not exactly subtle with its parody of an overly patriotic way of thinking, and it's not Pax Autocratica with his own criticism of monarchies. The game is a “darkly satirical” take on totalitarianism, where players can choose between a leader who truly seeks the best for his citizens, or a cruel monster who seeks nothing more than more land to rule over. In addition Pax Autocratica poking fun at the world's dictators, its developer, Multiverse, is doing something to impact those affected by real-world conflicts. From the moment of release, 1% of all revenue from the game will be donated to the Norwegian Refugee Council, a politically neutral group that provides “life-saving aid” to anyone displaced by global conflict.
While the cool stuff gives potential players an extra incentive to buy the game, its actual mechanics also seem extremely promising. Players have full control over their state apparatus, from its buildings to its population. They will start with a handful of shelters and eventually build massive buildings to house the expanding population, with citizens in the area to serve their purpose. Games like Satisfactory see players automating machines, but v Pax Autocraticathey automate the entire company. Players will be able to research numerous upgrades, building types, and technology types and can use them to make things run more smoothly. If citizens are properly motivated and doing their jobs, efficiency can be greatly increased, although players will have to choose how they deliver that motivation.
While the goal is to create a hard-working, successful company, you have to make your way to that point in whatever way you see fit. Citizens must master four traits—fear, happiness, hunger, and loyalty—and you can shape your society through these traits. Some players will want to take the approach of a benevolent leader and can do so through comfort, health care, and comfortable living quarters. Others will want to be the worst dictator there can be, and Pax Autocratica pulls no punches in this regard. Players can flog workers to mine them faster, order public executions, place surveillance towers around their colony, and use propaganda to indoctrinate the citizens into believing that all is well. This kind of freedom would make for a fun colonial simulation and automation game, but there are also roguelike FPS elements to consider.
Pax Autocratica is also worth a look for shooter fans
As players expand their empire (named Auroria), they will eventually have to conquer more territory in the broken lands of the Tyris system. If they do, they will find important citizens to expand their reach, new resources to acquire more upgrades, and business opportunities. However, if players want to claim and keep this land, they will have to do so through battle. Success in these conflicts will unlock advanced skills for the leader and army, but instead of viewing these conflicts from a top-down perspective as one might expect, they actually engage the player directly through FPS gameplay.
In clips shared for this promising indie game, players will wield grenades, futuristic assault and sniper rifles and more against ground forces, mechs and tanks. Not every battle will involve the latter two types of enemies – some of the territories players fight over will be held by weaker factions – but it will take a lot of effort to get out of the bigger conflicts. For players who need to do something more and have a hard time immersing themselves in purely automation games, this aspect can be a game changer. Pax AutocraticaThe genre mash-up will hit many different audiences, and if it all comes together to form a seamless gameplay loop, it can be a huge hit.
Those interested in Pax Autocraticabut aren't sure if they want to add it to their Steam wishlists, they'll be happy to know that a demo for the game is available to download right now.

Of course, Helldivers 2 fans who love the game primarily for its co-op may want to find another one Helldivers alternative. Sure, the humor and tone are there, as are the sci-fi setting and weapons, but it's fully single-player. Still, for those who want to try something a little different, Pax Automatica It seems to have a lot of depth and unique elements to its name. It certainly feels immersive on paper, and players won't have to wait long to see if everything meshes together nicely as this bowl of genres comes out in May.
