Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynchronized won't let you fight with hidden blades

As Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced's launch date approaches, Ubisoft is releasing more information about the remake. Yesterday we learned a lot about the game's customizable HUD and UI and how players will be able to change it to their liking. Later, the developers answered some questions about the game in a Reddit AMA.

One of the biggest changes in Black Flag Resynced, aside from the visuals, is combat. Ubisoft decided to evolve the original's dodge and counter system to include parries and a stagger meter to make it more engaging. However, with this, the developer removed the ability to fight with Edward Kenway's hidden blades.

Edward's Hidden Blade cannot be selected as a weapon in Black Flag resynchronized

One of the questions asked of the developers was whether Black Flag Resynced would allow players to use hidden blades as standalone weapons. Unfortunately, it looks like we won't make it. “Dual Swords are the primary weapons Edward will use in battle. The Hidden Blade is not a weapon of choice, but a fatal, contextual (and BLOODY!) takedown available when you breach your opponent's defenses,” Ubisoft responded. “This makes removing hidden blades a critical part of instant combat, which was not the case in the original.”

So it looks like we won't be able to take on enemies with only hidden blades, but we'll be able to finish them off with hidden blade takedowns after exhausting their turn meter. This change doesn't seem to have gone down well with fans as the answer currently has -55 downvotes and a number of negative comments.

“Having only 1 weapon gets old very quickly, especially since the finisher animation pool is already pretty low… The same few finisher animations will be played over and over again and get old quickly,” said one fan. Another commented: “Brother, this is such a disappointment. A huge misstep in an otherwise great looking remake.”

While the hidden blades didn't provide much in terms of range, they were quite stylish and fun to fight. I understand why the developers decided to make this change instead of a new combat system, but it was a memorable part of the original game.
