After previously telling fans to “move on” from The Lord of the Rings Online, Amazon's games boss has confirmed that his Lord of the Rings MMO has been cancelled.
With how popular Lord of the Rings is, you'd think it would be very easy in the world of video games. However, as history has taught us, this is not really the case. Outside of the iconic film tie-ins, Shadow of Mordor (but No Shadow of War) and some other classics, Lord of the Rings has it surprisingly rough when it comes to gameplay.
Perhaps the biggest example of this in recent memory is Amazon's Lord of the Rings MMO, which was announced a few years ago in 2023. It was recently reported that the second attempt at an MMO was canceled after a big round of layoffs at Amazon Games, something the company's head of games all but confirmed in a new statement.
Amazon Head Of Games Confirms Its Lord Of The Rings MMO Is Dead
I'm guessing we won't be moving from LOTR Online
Earlier today, Eurogamer shared a statement it received from Amazon's head of games Jeff Grattis after asking for an update on the status of the Lord of the Rings MMO. Grattis said Amazon's creative team “continues to explore a compelling new gaming experience that fits Tolkien's world,” essentially confirming that the MMO is no longer in the works.

Sorry, Hunt for Gollum, I'm not falling for it again
Tolkien's world has been mined too deep.
Of course, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the Lord of the Rings MMO has been cancelled, as the writing has been on the wall for quite some time. Amazon has been mostly silent on the matter for the past few months, and several reports have come out from developers working on the game that have made it clear that the project is not being worked on.
The slow cancellation of Amazon's Lord of the Rings MMO is especially ironic given that Lord of the Rings Online is still going strong after nearly 20 years. This is despite Amazon Games VP Christoph Hartmann previously saying that fans should “move on” from LOTR Online to play the MMO, which we now know won't happen.
