Sales of the last few PC versions of the PlayStation have reportedly been lower than expected, which is likely one of the reasons why the company is backing away from its multi-platform strategy. In March, PlayStation raised the price of its consoles, which is sure to raise concerns at the company that customers will be put off by the rising cost of console gaming. By removing the ability to play major PlayStation exclusives on PC, fans of certain games will need to purchase a console if they want to participate. This strategy has been popular with Nintendo since the beginning, although in recent years Xbox has focused on releasing games from its studios on all possible platforms.
PC gamers have been waiting at least a year for PlayStation games to be released on their platform of choice, with many being delayed even longer. This was allegedly because PlayStation wanted to encourage gamers to buy its hardware so they could play big name games on release. Not only that, but porting games to PC has not been a priority for the company, which always puts its proprietary hardware first. PlayStation Studios games also often experienced a second wave of popularity when they were released on PC, bringing a much-welcomed boost to sales and revenue.
