As the Stop Killing Games movement proves, your favorite online shooter doesn't have to be around forever. Some of the biggest FPS games sometimes their servers were shut down, effectively sentencing them to death by the publisher. Fortunately, at least on PC, the community tends to catch on and run unofficial servers, which is the only reason we can play games like 10 Six, Chromehounds, Global agendaand Infantry online in 2026. Unfortunately, several legendary FPS games have slipped through this safety net, relegating them to fond memories that reflect their once accessible glory.
Let's take a trip down history to remember those fallen games that once stood at the forefront of gaming, even though their time in the spotlight turned out to be short-lived. Their names are still being invoked on Reddit, Twitter and the like, hopefully ensuring that we never forget them. who knows Maybe one day it will return in one form or another.
“Legendary” is not synonymous with “great”. If the main image didn't already give it away, the reason I included this statement will become apparent in time.

M.A.G
The best large scale FPS MMO on consoles has been dead since 2014
M.A.G
- Released
-
January 26, 2010
Proper console exclusives are pretty rare these days, especially when it comes to online games. In 2010, however, this was not the case M.A.G launched exclusively on PS3. An ambitious MMO that broke the limits of the console multiplayer shooter by featuring a 256-player lobby, Zipper Interactive's masterpiece was quick to become one of the PS3's defining games. Combining epic faction warfare with squad-based action, M.A.G it brought a manageable sense of scale that allowed players to focus on easy-to-grab objectives while making their contributions feel important to the larger flow of battle. You may even be promoted to leadership roles that change your responsibilities.

Major FPS game franchises that are officially done
There was a time when FPS reigned supreme and these franchises were on top of the world, but today they are all dead and buried.
Although efforts have been made to create community servers, as of May 2026 M.A.G it's still completely unplayable, and it doesn't look like that's going to change anytime soon. Of all of them unplayable legendary FPS games discussed in this article, that's the one that hurts the most, especially since we probably didn't get a proper refund. Sony will bring M.A.G rear? Honestly, I don't know. Sony is said to be prioritizing multiplayer projects, but we haven't heard anything about it M.A.G revival.
Develop
Before Dead By Daylight is an asymmetrical multiplayer game
Develop

February 10, 2015
Asymmetric multiplayer games are so common these days that new releases barely register, but that wasn't the case in 2014. Develop defeat Dead by Daylight by over a year and its premise of manhunters vs. massive monsters would still be fresh considering most games go the “escape the horror villain” route. With well-defined specializations for hunters, Develop it had a lot in common with traditional first-person shooters, which was meant to broaden its reach. Apart from being generally cool, the monsters differed from each other and went through an evolution that gradually saw them transition from being hunted to being hunters.
Although it remained here for quite a long time, Develop was immediately disadvantaged by 2K, with the publisher slapping on a $59.99 price tag despite the game launching with only three monsters. Even worse, aggressive monetization dominated the discourse during the launch period, which immediately raised eyebrows Develop on the defensive. Despite all this nonsense, the game managed to find an audience that stuck around until the servers fell into oblivion. You can still play the match on PC if you're willing to jump through a few hoops, but the console version is pretty much just a training mode at this point.

T for Teens: Blood, Tobacco Use, Violence (online interactions not rated)
It might seem so Overwatch is still around because Blizzard has dropped the numbering scheme from the sequel and occasionally hosts “Overwatch: Classic” events that bring in a load of characters from the past. Make no mistake though, the original Overwatch nothing but a corpse at this point. Even more than any other FPS game mentioned in this article, this death felt even more cynical than usual, with Blizzard basically killing the old to make room for the new.
Overwatch was lightning in a bottle, and you can't get the magic of 2016 back in 2026. When the game came out, it was an incredibly innovative evolution of multiplayer shooters like Team Strength 2with the implementation of MOBA-style heroes who exuded personality from every fiber of their being. I'm only speaking for myself here – I don't miss it Overwatch but rather playing Overwatch in 2016. Still, the game should be alive.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (online on consoles)
The best Battlefield game is a shell of what it used to be
On December 8, 2023, EA shut down the servers for several months Battlefield games, incl Bad company 2. They were also removed from digital stores this year and can no longer be purchased. These are hardly the only games that EA has been shouting about in the last decade, and they won't be the last.

7 FPS masterpieces that nobody remembers today
These first-person shooters were and still are incredible, even if no one really talks about them anymore.
Technically you can still play Battlefield: Bad Company 2's offline single player that is definitely worth checking out. However, 80% of BattlefieldThe appeal of the game is its multiplayer, and killing is basically the same as killing the game. The removal also made singleplayer access unnecessarily difficult. On PC, fans put together Project Rome to allow for online matches, but consoles have absolutely no way to play Bad company 2multiplayer.
Concord
A legendary cautionary tale
Talk about what you want Concord and his two-week stumble, but he certainly managed to etch his name into gaming history. It has become the definitive example of a poorly thought-out trend-chasing game that enters a saturated market without anything new to offer. If Sony didn't immediately get cold feet and instead decided to keep the servers up for a year, Concord would become just another in a long line of failed multiplayer antics, joining the ranks Law breakers and XDefiant.
However, Concord he failed so quickly and publicly that he became legendary. Mission accomplished?
