Steam Deck just got more expensive

The Steam Deck will now cut customers a few hundred dollars more, as Valve has revealed updated prices for the OLED models of its popular gaming handheld. Although the Steam Deck OLED is back in stock as of this writing, the new pricing will affect users in the US and other regions.

Since its launch in 2022, Steam Deck has quickly become a notable way for users to play games from their Steam library on the go. Although the Steam Deck has since faced stiff competition in the handheld market, Valve's portable gaming tablet remains a popular gadget for PC enthusiasts and casual gamers alike. The Steam Deck was originally launched with LCD and OLED versions for users to choose from. However, Valve discontinued the Steam Deck LCD model in late 2025, making the OLED model the only new units since then.

Steam Deck just got more expensive worldwide

Although the Steam Deck faced supply issues throughout 2026, Valve has since restocked the Steam Deck OLED in the US. However, the Steam Deck OLED is now more expensive than before. At the time of writing, the Steam Deck OLED 512GB model has gone from $549 to $789, an increase of $240 excluding any taxes and fees. The 1TB Steam Deck OLED got a bigger bump, going from $649 to $949. The $300 price increase makes the Steam Deck OLED 1TB model now just $50 cheaper than the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X handheld. However, the 1TB Steam Deck OLED is now $50 more expensive than the $899 PS5 Pro. Along with the price increase in the US, the Steam Deck OLED also saw price increases in Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia and Poland.

Steam Deck's new pricing scheme is the latest change amid troubling times in the global video game industry. As of 2025, game consoles are becoming more expensive due to the state of the global economy and the ongoing DRAM shortage crisis. In short, demand for core components from AI-driven data centers has caused RAM, SSD, and CPU prices to rise by hundreds of dollars by the end of 2025.

Users can save some money on the Steam Deck OLED model by purchasing a certified refurbished unit from Valve while supplies last. The refurbished 512GB Steam Deck OLED will set users back $629, while the refurbished 1TB model will cost $759. While the Steam Deck is still cheaper than the ROG Xbox Ally X, the new price of the 1TB model makes it twice as expensive as the Nintendo Switch 2, its main market competitor. However, Nintendo will raise the price of the Switch 2 from $449 to $499 starting September 1st.

The Steam Deck price hike also raises questions about how much the upcoming Steam Machine will cost. Although Valve has kept its upcoming systems tightly under wraps, the Steam Machine is still on track to ship sometime in 2026. It remains to be seen how much the price of the Steam Deck will affect the Steam Machine.
