Key things
- PS5 lost the Resume button in mid-September 2024.
- Some recent developments suggest that this feature is gone for good.
- Resume Activity was previously supported in select games as a way to return to them without having to cold start them.
The PlayStation 5 recently lost the ability to Restore Activity. The popular feature was removed without much fanfare, causing confusion among PS5 owners.
Just as its name suggests, the Resume Activity button previously allowed users to jump right back into their last game (that supported the feature), picking up where they left off instead of cold starting it. But it disappeared after the release of PS5 firmware update 24.06-10.00.00, which was released in mid-September 2024.

And while some owners of Sony's latest console later speculated that the button had been accidentally removed or broken, such theories now seem even less likely than they originally were. As noted by Screen Rant, the latest PS5 firmware update from late October 2024, codenamed version 24.07-10.20.00, is largely focused on improving the game's Activity Cards. Specifically, it introduces three new activity categories: Not Started, In Progress, and Completed. All three still hide potential spoilers, as do the trophy lists. The change itself suggests that Sony is currently actively working on improving the activity cards, so it's less likely that the Reset Activity button was removed by mistake.
PS5's “Resume Activity” feature may never return
Deliberate disappearance of the element was always the most likely scenario. After all, the patch notes attached to the mid-September 2024 update 24.06-10.00.00 already mentioned that playing a “specific activity” would now require players to “first launch the game and find it” via the menus. This would be an unusual note if the Continue button was accidentally removed. A few weeks later, the PS5 received another patch in late September 2024 that did not bring the button back. Now that this latest one hasn't either, it looks like the Restore Activity feature may be gone for good.
Currently, there are two options for “resuming” game play after the PS5 has been put to sleep. One is to just select his tile icon from the main system menu, while the other is to scroll down to the bottom of his tab and select “Play Game”. Neither action will replicate the function of the Resume button, as both simply allow the console to cold start any given game.
So the PS5 no longer offers anything resembling the Xbox Series X/S's quick restore feature. Microsoft's take on the idea was already more versatile than Sony's Resume Activity button, not least because it allows users to pause more than one game. And while Quick Resume isn't supported by all Xbox Series X/S games, Resume Activity doesn't work with every PS5 title either.
