Previously introduced as Project: Robot, Gene AtlasA new trailer was revealed during Summer Game Fest 2026, offering a look at its world and characters. In addition to the mysterious universe that is often considered to be Uedo's signature style, Gene Atlas it also seems to introduce a new gameplay mechanic that has never been seen in any of his previous games it includes ICO, Shadow of the Colossusand The Last Guardian.
Gene Atlas was originally revealed during The Game Awards 2024, along with a short clip showing the protagonist and what appeared to be their companion mech, a giant robot. Even the short trailer was enough to hint at that Gene Atlasthen titled Project: Robot, it draws on Fumita Ueda's previous work, but maybe Shadow of the Colossus most of all.

Why 2026 is already one of the saddest years for shooter fans
Although it's only halfway through, it's clear that 2026 is one of the toughest times for fans of first-person and third-person shooters.
Gen Atlas is Fumit Ueda's first gun game
New trailer for Gene Atlas begins with the main character riding on the head of a colossal robot like a spaceship. It then cuts to a brief view of the open world map at day and night, suggesting that the game has a day/night cycle. The main character also appears to revive a defunct robot lying on the ground using their vessel, which is a giant robot head. The most interesting moment comes later in the trailer, where the protagonist is seen shooting enemies in a third-person shooter style. Notably, none of the director's previous games featured shooting mechanics Gene Atlas first time for Fumit Ueda's work.

Gene Atlas is Fumit Ueda's first game in about ten years. The director's previous new IP was The Last Guardiana single-player action-adventure game that carries the same fantasy themes that underpin his work. Gene Atlas is also the second game fully developed by Ueda's GenDesign studio, which he founded in 2014.
One detail about the upcoming Gene Atlas what may disappoint some players is that its PC version will launch exclusively on the Epic Games Store, skipping Valve's Steam storefront. Gene Atlas it is being developed in Unreal Engine and will be published by Epic Games, which probably explains the exclusivity. This means that the game is still ready for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
If the reaction to Gene Atlas“The new trailer is something to go on, it looks like the game is going to be one of the most interesting upcoming releases. However, Gene Atlas it still has no official release window and fans will have to wait for the next announcement from developer GenDesign to know more.
