Finding armor in Gothic 1 remake is much more difficult than in most traditional RPGs. Even if you manage to defeat bandits, camp guards, or commoners throughout the Colony, chances are they won't shed the armor they're wearing. Because of this, getting better protection becomes a priority very early in the game.
Fortunately, a fixed set of armor is available shortly after starting your adventure. While a similar version can be purchased for a hefty sum ore nuggets, there is also a completely free way to get it if you know where to look.

How to get free Digger's Armor in Gothic 1 Remake
After you arrive at the Old Camp and talk to the many NPCs scattered throughout the area, you'll likely encounter Fiskone of the camp traders. It sells various useful items including locks, weapons and most importantly Digger's Lightweight Pants.
The problem is the price. Fisk demands roughly 300 Ore Nuggets, which is an enormous amount of money during the opening hours of the game. While the armor offers decent defensive support, most players will have a hard time justifying spending that much money so soon. Fortunately, there is another option.
Free armor set called Digger's Dress it gives exactly the same defensive stats, making Fisk's version largely useless if you're willing to take a short trip.
To get this armor, you must first get to the New Camp. Either you can progress through the quests in the Old Camp until Mordrag offers Out of sight quest and will accompany you there, or make the journey yourself if you already know the route.
Once in the New Camp, head to the upper part where the main settlement is located. This area is full of houses, merchants, mercenaries, and a few important NPCs.
From there you can access the armor like this:
-
While facing the large purple glowing area below, turn around and head left.
-
Continue along the left wall and continue forward.
-
Eventually you will come across a path between the mountains.
-
Go through the open wooden entrance and continue forward until you see some Scavengers.
-
Ignore the Scavengers and continue straight to the cave entrance.
-
Go past the Molerats near the entrance and continue into the cave.
-
Using a torch is highly recommended here as it makes navigating the dark corridors much easier.
-
Continue along the only available path through the cave.
-
Once you emerge on the other side, stick to the path to the right.
-
After a short walk you will arrive at the Free Mine.
-
A mercenary near the entrance will automatically start a conversation with you. Keep the discussion brief and move on.
-
Head down into the mine to find an NPC named Swiney.
-
Talk to Swiny and tell him you want to become a digger.
-
When asked if you have worked on a vein before, answer “Yes”.
-
