Stranger than the sky officially has a release date: January 15, 2027. The long-awaited announcement arrived in the form of a brand new trailer, which also revealed something much more unexpected than the January release: Tupac Shakur as Stranger than the sky character.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has long been happy to bring famous entertainers into its games, and its next big-budget project already provides a recent example with Snoop Dogg. That means Snoop Dogg got involved Stranger than the sky was teased years in advance by both the musician and the developer himself, so it was much less of a shock than what RGG and Sega just showed off at Summer Game Fest.

Stranger Than Heaven really wants you to think it's not a dragon game
Stranger Than Heaven may not technically be a Like a Dragon game, but it seems to be just a formality based on connections that have recently surfaced.
The new Stranger Than Heaven trailer puts a special twist on the RGG Celebrity Cameo tradition
According to Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Tupac Shakur's effigy has been recreated Stranger than the sky in collaboration with Amaru Entertainment, which manages the late rapper's estate. The developer also clarified that the character model was created using archival footage and photos rather than AI, a detail that may help explain why Sega addressed the unusual “cast” choice so directly alongside the January 15th release date announcement. Surprise factor aside, the fact that Tupac will be dead for over 30 years Stranger than the sky hits on the market certainly makes this listing stand out from the typical Yakuza / Like a Dragon celebrity fare.
Some fans blame Snoop Dogg for bringing Tupac out of the grave. (Again)
The reveal quickly became one of the most divisive points since the opening day of Summer Game Fest 2026. Some fans embraced the absurdity of seeing Tupac appear in RGG's half-century-long crime epic, while others questioned Shakur's estate for approving the cameo. The backlash also drew Snoop Dogg deeper into the story for his own Stranger than the sky Some online critics saw him as a link between two portraits of the rap world. This criticism is sharpened by old baggage: Snoop Dogg was part of the infamous set of Dr. Dre's 2012 Coachella, which brought a digital Tupac to the stage, causing considerable fan controversy in the process. While this helps explain why some netizens are now blaming Snoop Dogg for RGG's Tupac gimmick, there are currently no definitive indications that the musician was actually the primary influence behind the polarizing digital portrait.
Owned by Snoop Dogg The role of Stranger Than Heavenmeanwhile, it has already been outlined in much more detail. He plays Orpheus, a smuggler who encounters protagonist Makoto Daito at the beginning of the game after Makoto tries to get to Japan. Orpheus seems to help set the story in motion, though he ends up helping Makoto only inadvertently. Snoop Dogg's son, Cordell Broadus, is included Stranger than the sky the cast too.

Although the SGF 2026 trailer ran for just over a minute, Stranger than the sky has already seen a long showcase this spring. The April 30 presentation included over half an hour of new footage from the upcoming Yakuza prequel, including a scene that appears to tease at least one boss fight with Snoop Dogg's character.
