It's not too much to call Final Fantasy 7 Revelation one of the most anticipated games of 2027 – potentially the most anticipated, depending on what else comes out that year. The title itself “Final Fantasy 7 Revelation” was something of a revelation in itself; the subtitle of this latest entry in the remake saga wasn't revealed until footage of the game itself was shown at Summer Games Fest 2026.

First record in FF7 the remake saga has a rather simple title: Final Fantasy 7 Remake. This can probably be attributed to the fact that this was the first entry in the remake saga, and Square Enix wanted to set expectations early on from the project: it's a reimagining of the original. FF7 story, not just a more faithful version of it. Then there was Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in 2024, which the subtitle was originally supposed to read Reunionprobably in reference to the Jenova Reunion theory, but this was instead chosen for Final Fantasy 7 – Crisis Core remake/remaster. Rebirth it could be related to Sephiroth's strange mother-son relationship with Jen, or even Cloud's rebirth at the hands of Hojo, though Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will cover this particular event in much more detail.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will reveal the truth behind Cloud Strife
Aerith's death at the hands of Sephiroth is brutal enough, but it's probably not the most tragic part Final Fantasy VII story. For my money, this tribute involves a bombshell twist about who Cloud Strife really is. As with many other parts of the remake saga, it is very likely that the way this information is conveyed will differ in Revelationbut we can probably expect the basic details to remain the same.

At first glance, Cloud seems like a typical mysterious hero, especially in the remakes, where he is significantly more stoic and serious. This isn't just a cliché, though: the gaps in Cloud's memory, his tendency to get confused, and his fugue states all have explanations. Sephiroth appears to offer one near the climax of the story, telling Cloud that he is actually a “failed clone of Sephiroth” created by Hojo five years prior to the start of the game. Cloud rejects this notion at first, but eventually accepts it over other evidence
However, this turned out to be a red herring, a manipulation by Sephiroth to get Cloud to free his corporeal body from the mako crystal in the North Crater. It seems to actually work as Cloud provided Sephiroth with the Dark Matter and subsequently freed him. This is a disaster, of course, but it's just the beginning Final Fantasy VIImind bending antics that are further explained with the help of Tifa and Lifestream.
Cloud is the living legacy of Zack Fair
As it turns out, Cloud isn't actually Sephiroth's clone – he's the same boy Tifa grew up with in Nibelheim. When he was 14, he signed up for the Shinra Army's SOLDIER program, which subjects accepted applicants to severe mako treatment, turning them into elite, near-superhuman agents. However, Cloud did not qualify for the SOLDIER program because he lacked the necessary mental strength.
Note: It has been speculated that Cloud's lack of psychological preparedness was connected to his original reason for joining Shinra: to try to impress Tifa rather than serve any greater purpose.
Still dejected, Cloud enlisted in the Shinra army as a foot soldier, where he met Zack Fair, the protagonist Crisis core and tertiary character in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Zack, who was actually a SOLDIER, became something of a mentor and idol to Cloud, eventually accompanying him on his mission to Mount Nibel, the same mission that ended with Sephiroth massacring Nibelheim as shown at the beginning Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. But this flashback sequence is deliberately deceptive.

First of all, Cloud never became a SOLDIER. He joined Zack and Sephiroth on this mission to Mount Nibel, but only as a pawn. He didn't even take off his helmet in front of Tifa; she never knew it was there. What do we play at the beginning? Rebirth is largely a figment of Cloud's imagination, a fantasy in which he puts himself in Zack's shoes. In fact, Cloud's entire SOLDIER personality, the identity he presents and is believed by most Final Fantasy VIIis a facade loosely based on Zack's personality.

After Sephiroth burned Nibelheim and his body was lost in the mako reactor, Cloud and Zack were captured by Hojo, who performed mako experiments on them for four years. They eventually escaped, and Zack was able to recover from the experiments more easily than Cloud, who was essentially declared an invalid. So Zack led a mostly unconscious Cloud around the continent for about a year, avoiding the Shinra Corporation. They were eventually beset by a massive swarm of Shinra troops, resulting in Zack's death.
Cloud, who was beginning to regain consciousness at this time, survived the ambush and encountered a fallen Zack on the battlefield. With his dying breath, Zack bequeathed his sword to Cloud, anointing him with his 'bequest'. The combination of superior mako healing methods – which also gave Cloud SOLDIER-like physical abilities – and the trauma of the previous five years shocked Cloud's psyche, making him believe that he was, in a sense, Zack Fair, the legendary 1st Class SOLDIER with the Buster Sword.
This turn was clearly telegraphed in the previous two Final Fantasy VII redo the installments, though probably not enough for a FF7 newbie guess it. In any case, the remake of the saga clearly seems to be heading in the same direction as the original Final Fantasy VII in view of this revelation, and although there are more secrets to be revealed, the subtitle Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is probably a reference to the Zack-Cloud fiasco.
