While PS Plus Extra usually releases a big batch of games in the middle of the month, pushing their releases so that Essential games are in the spotlight for a few weeks, Sony recently started experimenting with a new strategy. This strategy gives PS Plus subscribers access to one of the Extra games early Sonic X Shadow Generationsthough the catch is that June's other extra games will debut later than expected.
PS Plus Extra subscribers in the US, UK and Japan can play Sonic X Shadow Generations right nowfour days ahead of its expected launch as one of the PS Plus Extra games that ends on June 16. For those unfamiliar with the game, it features story modes for Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow, essentially a two-in-one package where players control the blue blur and its much more edgy equivalent. Sonic's half is a remastered, older game, while Shadow's portion is completely fresh, giving both new and old Sonic fans something to appreciate.

This month, the only PS Plus Extra games dropping globally at the same time are Epic Final Fantasy 16 and Guitar Man. Everything else from a realistic medieval game Kingdom Come: Deliverance to relax Farming Simulator 25will be ready for US, UK and Japanese players. It's unclear whether these gradual releases will be the norm going forward, or if this is just a one-off experiment by Sony to collect data on how its players use PlayStation Plus.
While Sony hasn't given any reasons for this new method of delivering games, it's not hard to theorize why the test is happening. As the price of a monthly subscription to PlayStation Plus rises, Sony is likely looking for a way to make the program seem like it's giving players more without actually increasing the amount of content they get. If extra-level players feel like they have a reason to check PS Plus every week, they may feel like the service is giving them more money by staying subscribed. Additionally, Sony's data may show that some games are getting lost in the “all at once” drop, and the new method is a way to ensure each game gets its time to shine.
Whatever the reasoning, it will be interesting to see how PlayStation Plus subscribers react to the changes. While the fans Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is benefiting, some may be disappointed that they won't get the June Extra game they were most looking forward to at the usual time they expected it to be released.
