As summer approaches, four Xbox games are set to end their online services for good in the next few months. Most of these Xbox titles are sports games that, due to their annual release schedule, often fall victim to online server shutdowns when players upgrade to the latest version.
When games are terminated, players are usually given enough advance notice to say goodbye to the game. Unfortunately, the current gaming ecosystem means that game servers are constantly being shut down, and they may not always be older titles. Live service titles like Concord and High Guardianwhich were shut down within weeks of their initial release, serve as examples of modern games that were abandoned once initial sales failed to meet expectations.

Retailer alert for PS5 and Xbox console shortage issue
Major retailers are bracing for a significant shortage of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles during the 2026 holiday season.
Xbox Game Shutdown (July + August 2026)
- Madden NFL 23 (July 13, 2026)
- NBA 2K court 2 (August 20, 2026)
- WWE 2K Battlegrounds (August 20, 2026)
- Warface: Clutch (August 25, 2026)
The first upcoming shutdown belongs Madden NFL 23whose servers will be shut down for the last time on July 13. There have been three games in the series since then, with a 2027 release slated for August, so this shutdown (unfortunately) makes sense. This will follow NBA 2K court 2 and WWE 2K Battlegroundsboth of which will lose online services on August 20. Both are Saber Interactive games that bring an arcade spin to their sports, so it's definitely a shame to see them go. The last game is Warface: Clutchwhich will go offline on August 25th after going offline on PC back in May.

The degree to which these games remain playable will depend entirely on the specific title. Anything purely single-player will still be playable offline, but any online features will be completely unavailable on the day the game ends. For Madden NFL 23, NBA 2K court 2and WWE 2K Battlegroundsthere are still playable elements that players will be able to enjoy after the online servers are gone. However, Warface: Clutch it requires a constant online connection to function, so after August 25th the Xbox version will no longer be playable in any capacity.
While the servers for these games may be shut down over the summer, it's always possible that a community-led revival will bring them back to life for the more popular titles. It's not guaranteed, of course, but there are plenty of examples of dead games that have kept their communities alive for several years.
As more and more titles have been shut down in recent years, consumer backlash against the practice has grown, leading to the recent popularity of the Stop Killing Games movement. Ultimately, it remains to be seen exactly how successful this will be in the long run, but the movement has a lot of support among the gaming community.
