Once you have selected the appropriate color, shoot the Flare straight into the sky. After a short trail of Flare smoke, yes create a cloud of smoke that stays in the sky for 45 seconds. Other players will be able to see this signal from quite a distance, so make sure you fire the flare when absolutely necessary.

While the Flare Gun is an endlessly usable item, make sure you only use it when necessary, as firing too much into the sky can attract unwanted attention from nearby players.

In one instance during my playthrough I did accidentally set off a red flare when an enemy Trampler was nearby. They took this as a hostile signal and we engaged in an avoidable PvP fight. Me on the other hand he launched a green flare when a trampler was approaching my place and they changed course after seeing my signal to be friendly.

However, the outcome of the flare depends entirely on how aggressive your lobby is.
