Yu-Gi-Oh's New Chess-Themed Set, Chaos Rising, See More Extended Art Cards Debut

It looks like Yu-Gi-Oh Battles of Legends: Glorious Gallery has just begun, and yet we're already welcoming another new set of power-up cards to the game. Chaos Origins is an homage to the anime and manga that so many fans are familiar with, and features an overall unique chess theme, so no monsters from the main pack are included in the set.

Chaos Origins dropped today (July 2nd) and brings with it 100 new cards, including five new expanded arts available in Ultra Rare and Starlight Rare. This booster set also remakes some classic cards to be viable in the modern game, something that many long-running TCGs with older favorites often fail to do.

This set will also see the debut of Starlight 2.0 cards, which include visual tweaks to the Starlight Rare treatment to make them easier to read while producing richer colors for the cards themselves. The old gray borders are also gone, replaced by new iridescent foil borders.

Extended Arts are all the rage in Yu-Gi-Oh, so five more just started

Expanded Art Cards are fairly new to Yu-Gi-Oh, but Konami isn't keeping duelists waiting too long for more popular new variants. Five new extended art cards were launched in the Chaos Origins booster pack; they are:

  • Chaotic phantasmal sacred beasts
  • Wizard of Dark Chaos – Black Chaos
  • Black Luster Soldier – A soldier of light and darkness
  • Phara the primordial goddess
  • A witness to antiquity

Each of these cards are available in Ultra Rare and Starlight Rare variants, and early indicators suggest that while none of these cards will match the most expensive Glorious Gallery card, they will still be worth hundreds of dollars.

Magician of Chaos and Black Luster Soldier are two cards that are getting upgrades as part of Chaos Origins. Wizard now prevents your opponent from destroying or banishing your spells and traps, can grab a spell from your graveyard when summoned, and can banish one of your opponent's cards each turn.

As for Black Luster Soldier, it cannot be destroyed in battle, banishes one of the opponent's cards when summoned, gains 1500 attack points when it destroys an opponent's monster in battle, and then can attack again.

The most expensive YuGiOh card from the Battles of Legend Glorious gallery.

Between the cute new Chibi cards and the awesome extended art, this new YGO set has some extremely valuable Starlight Rare cards.

Classic Yami Yugi monsters get updated cards

Fans of the Yu-Gi-Oh anime, manga, and TCG will be familiar with cards like Summoned Skull, Celtic Guardian, and Kuriboh. Now all three of these cards have been reworked with new mechanics and designs for each one.

Summoned Skull can now send a Ritual Spell to the Graveyard from your hand or deck before adding the corresponding Ritual Monster to your hand.

Celtic Guardian can now let you draw three cards before discarding two, and Kuriboh can still protect your life, but that now includes effect damage.

Those are just the headlines from the new Chaos Origins booster pack, but there are plenty of updates and exciting new cards among the 100 additions. This release is really for fans of the OG anime and manga series, but there's something for everyone, including Starlight Rare's massive chases.
