PlayStation issues new official statement on PS Plus pricing changes

Sony and PlayStation executives recently discussed profitability PS Plus at a company meeting when asked about possible future price increases. With the cost of everything rising as the PS3/Vita Store shuts down and disc production ends in 2028, it shouldn't be a surprise that a PS Plus price increase is apparently on the table, but it may not be bad news – emphasis on the word “may”.

While the future of PS Plus, consoles and more is up in the air, sometimes it's better to focus on the here and now. And now and here, subscribers have a few days to download free PS Plus games for June 2026 (Essential tier). Popular survival game Grounded: Fully Yoked Editionbrand-focused platformer Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2and a brutal co-op action game Warhammer 40K: Darktide they're currently up for grabs until July 7th, when they'll rotate with the free PS Plus games for July. In short, PlayStation is working to balance the value of the service (what it provides) and cost to consumers, with several factors aimed at improving the profitability and efficiency of content on PS Plus. Although it was not stated who responded, one director added:

“PS Plus offers strong value to players, and we continually balance that value against the customer's costs. We are using several levers to improve profitability, including pricing, tier mix and content acquisition efficiency. The higher tiers now represent 40% of subscribers, reflecting strong demand for the service. PS Plus remains a key driver of profitability, and we achieved record PS Plus profitability in fiscal 2025.”

On the one hand, this should be a relief to those who are worried about the possible price of the PlayStation 6 console, changes in game distribution and everything else that is happening in the industry. After all, this is record high profitability in fiscal 2025. On the other hand, it appears to be record high profitability, and yet it has not prevented continued economic stress. It's a standard answer that sounds good for now, but it's also subject to change at any time.

It's worth noting that neither Sony nor PlayStation have officially announced anything regarding the PlayStation 6, but as the Xbox studio closes, PlayStation has its own structural issues (such as Bluepoint's closure), and plans are being made until 2028, it might as well exist. Right now, that's the announcement everyone wants to see. Maybe things could change between now and the PS6's announced release in 2027, but it's not something to hold your breath for.
