Elden Ring: Nightreign Lore Explained

Without the ability to predict, it would be almost impossible to predict Elden Ring NightreignPvE, procedurally generated, co-op roguelike set in the world Elden Ring. Although the cost of entry is expected to be about the same as Shadow of Erdtree, Elden Ring Nightreign it will be a completely separate product, disconnected from the base game both literally (e.g. in terms of data storage) and story-wise.

Elden Ring NightreignDirector Junya Ishizaki has already spoken about the upcoming title, albeit with the coy reserve that one would expect from FromSoftware at this point. Ishizaki told IGN Nightreign will take place in a world that is “completely separate and parallel to the world Elden Ring's, with the only major factor in common being The Shattering, the event that set the drama of the original game in motion. in other words Nightreign shares virtually nothing with tradition Elden Ring post-shattering, so the events of the game itself will have no effect on the story. But there's a lot that happened before Shatter that could theoretically make it in Nightreignstory.

The Elden Ring Nightreign is seemingly connected to The Nox

The Nox are a community that inhabited The Lands Between before the rise of the Golden Order. Worshipers of the night and practitioners of strange alchemical experiments, their way of life was eventually deemed sacrilegious by the Golden Order, and the Nox were banished underground. They live in three mysterious cities Elden Ring players no doubt know:

  • Nokron
  • Noskella
  • The Nameless Eternal City

Deep underground, with nothing but a facsimile of the night sky to remind them of their sacred ways, the Nox are left to await the Age of Stars, which they believe will be heralded by the Night Lord, which will lead them to prosperity. . Basically, this Night Lord is a savior figure for the Nox.

It doesn't take much to connect the Night Lord with the Night Lord, the supposed adversary Elden Ring Nightreign. A night tide that reaches into Nightreign's map over time, may be the result of the Night Lord's influence on this unknown land, suggesting that this messianic figure may not be as benevolent as the Nox make them out to be. From Nightreign takes place in some sort of alternate reality, perhaps his timeline is one where the Night Lord (or someone claiming to be a Night Lord) came to prominence. This possibility has a number of implications, not the least of which is Nox's alleged newfound status within this “Night Reign”.

The title and generally mysterious aura of the Night Lord may remind some of the Night King
game of thrones
and
A Song of Ice and Fire
. While there may be some inspiration from these works, Ishizaki confirmed that Martin is not messing with them

The parallel universe premise of Elden Ring Nightreign opens up a can of worms

The aforementioned lore elements are understandable and tantalizing enough, but FromSoftware decided to muddy the waters a bit by introducing a once-forgotten Dark souls characters to Nightreign. Specifically, the Centipede Demon and the Nameless King appear in the game's reveal trailer, alongside what appears to be The Firekeeper and Duke's Dear Frejia from Dark Souls 3 and Dark Souls 2respectively

This could just be a case of asset recycling, which is something FromSoftware is known to do, although it's pending confirmation. However, if the inclusion of these elements is more, it could indicate an official narrative connection Elden Ring and Dark soulswhich would greatly complicate the tradition of both franchises.
