Summary

  • After three decades in the industry, Insomniac Games founder Ted Price is retiring.

  • Price oversaw the company as it was responsible for hits like Ratchet & Clank, Spyro and Marvel's Spider-Man.

  • Price's role will be taken over by three Insomniac Games developers who will act as co-heads.

Insomniac Games founder Ted Price has announced that he is leaving the company after more than three decades of delivering games like Ratchet & Clank, Spyro the Dragon, Spider-Man and more.

Without a doubt, one of the main things that has made the PlayStation famous today is its line-up of first-party studios. Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Santa Monica and others immediately come to mind, but I'd say the last two generations have shown just how important Marvel's Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank developers Insomniac Games are.

Almost two decades later, we still haven't found the lost Lombax.

Since it was founded in 1994 as Xtreme Software before quickly rebranding in 1995, Insomniac has been delivering non-stop hits for the PlayStation, from the early days with Spyro the Dragon to the final years with Marvel's Spider-Man. Insomniac Games announced today that studio founder Ted Price is retiring as the studio reaches its 30-year anniversary.

Price even found success outside of PlayStation with what I would argue is one of Insomniac's best games – Sunset Overdrive.

Ted Price retires from gaming with insomnia after 30 years

A blog post by Ted Price was shared on SIE's official website, confirming that he is quitting both Insomniac Games and “the industry” at the end of March this year. Price reveals that he made the decision last year and that he felt it was time to step back and let others take over the team.

Over the past year, I've had the opportunity to work with Insomniac's senior leadership team to create a succession plan that I know will provide the continuity, stability, and strong leadership necessary to deliver more of what our fans value over the next several decades. – Ted Price

Speaking of which, Price also shared that Insomniac Games will soon be overseen by three joint studio heads, including Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider, and Jen Huang, who shared their thoughts on Price's departure and the future of Insomniac in a post on the PlayStation Blog . All three upcoming co-heads seem excited about the future of Insomniac and what it will bring to the table.

While Insomniac Games seems to be in good hands as they approach future titles like Wolverine and the rumored Venom spin-off, things will certainly be different without Price at the helm. I hope he has a good retirement – he certainly earned it after so many years of great work.
