Modern Warfare 3 Studio Sledgehammer Games is said to be in charge Call of Duty game planned for 2027. The rumor also suggests that, contrary to expectations, it may mark the return of another Call of Duty subseries than expected, thus breaking with recent series tradition.
In recent years there have been reports of Call of Duty publisher Activision after a two-year run with the franchise's subseries. According to this plan, a certain sub-series – e.g. Modern warfare – will continue for two years COD installments before being replaced by another. Accordingly, Activision supplied two Modern warfare titles back to back in 2022 and 2023 before moving on to Black Ops for 2024. Importantly, this two-year cycle allows players to transfer items, including operators, weapons, and cosmetics, obtained in one game to the other, since the two were part of the same sub-series. However, a new report claims that this release model may change within a few years.

According to Hope's leak on Twitter, upcoming posts in Call of Duty the 2026 and 2027 series will be led by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, respectively. With a Black Ops 6 sequel, which has been speculated to be released next year, Hope revealed that the 2026 entry will “probably” Modern Warfare 4in accordance with the strategy of the two-year cycle. As regards COD title, which is due out in 2027, they emphasized that this is not “Year 2 Modern warfare game” from now on. In other words, it means that the game doesn't have to be consecutive Modern warfare a title that breaks with the series' recent tradition that was established with last year's Modern Warfare 3 comes right after Modern Warfare 2 the year before.
Call of Duty may return to a long untouched sub-series
Although it states that 2027 Call of Duty the game will not be back to back Modern warfare Hope mentioned that there was a chance that it could be Advanced Warfare 2 or “something new”, although the plan remains “unclear” at this time. In the comments, several fans preferred it to be Advanced Warfare title, while several others expressed their interest in seeing the 2013 sequel Call of Duty: Ghosts instead. In response to one of them, the leaker said it could “easily” turn out to be a prequel to 2014 Advanced Warfare.
It's too early to tell when it shook Call of DutyRecent series lore will lead to the franchise returning to another sub-series or creating a whole new thing. But in the event that 2027 marks the return of the old subseries, it's likely that Advanced Warfare 2 than a ghosts continuation or an Infinite Warfare tracking.
