Of all the video game genres, RPGs are the ones that change and evolve the most. Given how vast the space is, there's so much room for innovation and new ideas to flourish, and the past few months have shown that the push for revolution is far from abating.

5 action RPGs coming soon to PS5
Fear not, PlayStation 5 owners, you can get your hands on this exciting and action-packed RPG soon.
2026 has already proven to be an incredible year for gaming across all games, but when you get down to RPGs specifically, the level of quality and amount of progress made is pretty hard to match anywhere else in the industry. Whether players are interested in turn-based strategies or real-time action, there is sure to be a new game unlike anything they've experienced before.
The focus is on the incredible RPG that was released earlier this year; however, we will include two upcoming titles which have a 2026 release date.
Obviously, we have no way of knowing if these will be 10/10 masterpieces, but they are incredibly promising.

RPG Masterpieces 2026
Esoteric ebb
Mistakes are the way
Details:
-
Dialog options significantly affect crashes and errors
-
Investigation becomes the primary way forward
Esoteric ebb approaches roleplaying from an unusual angle by emphasizing flawed characters rather than power fantasies. Conversations branch out heavily based on personality traits, social awkwardness, and botched interactions, turning otherwise crucial mistakes into meaningful outcomes instead of punishments that keep the story moving forward.
The detective-inspired structure also takes the focus away from the constant combat and adds a more psychological element to the game, allowing it to stand out from the crowd of more action-packed titles. From the time I played, I was pleasantly surprised by how well thought out the contradictory and failed paths were, and at no point did I feel like I needed to replay a segment, at least not until my second playthrough.
Escape from Ever After
Child prodigy on another level
Details:
-
Narrative satire that is very self-aware
-
Familiar archetypes combined with a more comedic twist
Escape from Ever After uses classic fairy tale imagery to explore themes of exploitation, corporate control, and social collapse, all while maintaining lightness and humor. Fantasy worlds might normally be thought of as a form of escapism, but here they are reframed as worlds shaped by economics and power structures that bring them closer to reality and allow players to deal with both sides at once.

Is it really worth playing a 100 hour RPG on the new Plus game?
A 100 hour RPG is a bit of a chore to get through, so is it even worth your time to jump into a second run of NG+? Let's find out.
Mechanically, I found myself constantly smiling as one minute you're traversing a lake of ice and the next you're fighting a giant boss in turn-based combat, so no matter how far you progress in the game, you always end up with a new way to play. Due to the constant structural shift, the game feels quite experimental, but unlike many other failed attempts, it holds its ground and manages to maintain its satirical identity even as you explore more serious ideas.
Mewgenics
A cat adventure indeed
Details:
-
A roguelike loop with turn-based RPG gameplay
-
Deep build and item combination options
If I had to describe Mewgenics in a word, it would be crazy. The game loop boils down to breeding cats and taking them in for a series of action-packed adventures, but as usual in an Edmund McMillen game, nothing ever goes to plan. These morning hours were filled with countless “what?” and “so it works?”, because just when you think you understand the basics, the game throws another curveball your way.
As the game progresses, players gain access to new classes, each inspired by the classics D&D archetypes like warriors and mages, and as the house starts to fill up with more and more cats, the eugenic side of the game starts to get pretty out of control. A roguelite at heart with an incredibly unique take on the RPG genre, if you're looking for a new gaming addiction, I guarantee Mewgenics is what you need.
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection
Building lifetime bonds
Details:
-
Collecting creatures on a grand scale
-
Simplified gameplay that opens the door to multiplayer
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection expands Monster Hunter universe even further through a much more narrative experience that feels more accessible and efficient than ever before. Bonding with monsters has become a much more integral part of the game as it directly affects the player's combat abilities, traversal and strategic options across the world.
One of the biggest things I noticed is the way the environments are decided, it's semi-open world rather than completely open-ended, which keeps the flow of content much more cohesive while still leaving plenty of room for exploration. In many ways, the RPG brings monster collecting into a more modern setting, where the actions are more responsive and there are fewer obstacles in the way of truly immersing yourself in the story.
Crimson desert
What doesn't this game have?
Details:
-
Everything from base building to kite flying
-
Huge game diversity in a huge world
Before Crimson desert even when it launched, players called it a revolutionary RPG that would shake up the entire open world space. Now that the game is out in the wild, it's safe to say that statement has largely come true, as it's pretty hard to find a mechanic, idea, or playstyle that doesn't exist in the world.

The 10 Greatest CRPG Masterpieces of All Time, Ranked
CRPGs aren't going away, as evidenced by these incredible masterpieces from Daggerfall to Baldur's Gate 3.
The scale is a big draw, because once you unlock a bit of mobility and can take to the skies, the level of freedom is virtually unmatched within the genre. I was taken aback by how much content and how many things there were to do and spent hours fighting mobs and bosses, then planting crops and even petting a few cats along the way. When it comes to modern open world games, Crimson desert he's definitely leading the charge.
Promising upcoming RPG
Phantom Blade Zero
More than another Soulslike
Details:
-
Unique techniques tied to each weapon
-
Influence of heavy martial arts
Phantom Blade Zero it may look like another eastern soul, but the combat, story, and world-building are far from typical. Playing as Soul, you only have 66 days to live, and in that time players must fight their way through virtually everything that moves, slashing blades, and jumping into action to uncover the truth behind the death sentence.
The reason the game looks so unique is its dedication to fighting styles and the inspiration behind them. Based on authentic Kungfu and Wuxia styles, players can use a variety of different weapons, each with their own movesets and combos, and without being tied down to one particular path, they are free to take on the role of a true warrior fighting to the last breath.
Beast from Reincarnation
Far from the gaming freak's comfort zone
Details:
-
A mix of turn-based combat and real-time combat
-
Both human and dog attack inputs
Game Freak may be mostly known for a small series of games titled Pokemonbut now he's branching out into new territory with his latest project, Beast from Reincarnation. The world is stunning, blending technology and nature into one, where everything from the environment to the creatures within it are covered in contrasts, creating a unique aesthetic that leans on the apocalyptic nature of the universe.
In terms of gameplay, players will be able to use both real-time and turn-based combat to take on the mountainous threats before them, but luckily they won't have to do it alone with their trusty dog Koo by their side to help when the battle gets tough. First of all, I'm incredibly excited because I love when games mix genres and I'm always looking for new ARPGs that really break the mold.
