This has been known for some time Assassin's Creed Hex is developed by Ubisoft Montreal, the team behind some of the biggest installments in the series – like Assassin's Creed 2, Black flagand Unity. Additionally, as a “flagship” Assassin's Creed game, as confirmed via a 2022 blog post on Ubisoft's official website, Hex it's positioned as a major release for the franchise and part of its long-term future, rather than just filler material.

And all this was stated by the new creative director for Assassin's Creed HexJean Guesdon (Black flag, Origins), who took over the game after its former creative director Clint Hocking left Ubisoft in February 2026 amid some wider management changes at the studio.

While the handful of confirmed details about it alone are worth it, that's where things get even more interesting Assassin's Creed Hex has been in various rumors and leaks surrounding it since its announcement in 2022. The most prominent of these rumors is undoubtedly its 16th-century Central European setting, but more specifically its premise of witch trials that took place during that period (via Insider Gaming). The game's current title even hints at this, with the word “hexa” meaning “witch” in German.
In that regard, the same Insider Gaming report said Assassin's Creed Hex a female protagonist named Elsa will appear, and she even claimed that footage sent to the publication showed her having a cat nearby to distract the guards. Hex was also described by Insider Gaming as a “more linear experience”, despite Ubisoft's official announcement in 2022 that it would be an open-world game. Finally, the new “Fear” inspired system Assassin's Creed SyndicateThe Jack The Ripper DLC will reportedly be implemented into the game, although no details have been given on how the system will work.
A much more recent Insider Gaming report focuses on a major restructuring in Hexthe team stated that around 50 developers were pushed out of the project and transferred to Ubisoft's Interproject team. It was also mentioned that trustworthy Assassin's Creed insider and content creator j0nathan revealed that new creative director Jean Guesdon is stripping the game of any magic-related abilities, instead grounding its sorcery in things like alchemy and illusion. The same message indicated this Assassin's Creed Hex was targeting a June 2027 release, but team restructuring could see a move to the 2027 holiday season.
New “Fear” inspired system Assassin's Creed SyndicateThe Jack The Ripper DLC will reportedly be implemented into the game, although no details have been given on how the system will work.
Even more rumors have been brought to Insider Gaming, as mentioned by Gaming Bolt in a report on a recent episode of the Insider Gaming Podcast. First, Ubisoft Montreal apparently hired ropers to come in and do motion capture for the game, which suggests an even greater emphasis on acrobatics in both parkour and combat. This would naturally lead to an overhauled combat system as well, but it all depends on how far the studio went with the animation. Secondly, it was stated that Assassin's Creed Hex would bring a loved one Assassin's Creed 2 the protagonist Ezio Auditore da Firenze will be a mentor of sorts for the incoming Assassin in the game.
Rumors aside, Assassin's Creed Hexe shows promise
Even with such a large amount Assassin's Creed Hex still living in the realm of rumors and leaks, little Ubisoft has confirmed that it has enough to become one of the most interesting games on the franchise's horizon. A darker, narrative single player game Assassin's Creed the Ubisoft Montreal experience already sounds like a bit of a departure from the series' recent identity, and the fact that it's a flagship suggests that Ubisoft sees this as more than just a side experiment. Whether each leak turns out to be correct or not, Hex at least it seems to be built on the idea that Assassin's Creed manages to surprise players even after almost two decades.
Rumors are exciting, especially those that point to a witch trial setting, grounded witchcraft, and a more focused structure, but the game doesn't need every leaked detail to be true for it to matter. If Ubisoft can deliver a darker tone, it has already been confirmed in the delivery Hex enough of his own identity, this could be the kind of entry that reminds fans there's still room Assassin's Creed evolve without moving the needle too far as before.
