South Park: The Stick Of Truth
Comedy RPG with gameplay similar to Paper Mario
After many decades of low-quality releases, the critically acclaimed animated series is for adults South Park finally got its first good video game adaptation in 2014 in the form of South Park: The Stick of Truth. This time around, Matt Stone and Trey Parker worked closely with Obsidian Entertainment to ensure that the final product not only had the series' signature style of humor, but also played well.
Needless to say, they did not disappoint. The stick of truth is an accessible yet endlessly fun turn-based RPG that keeps players engaged with timed button inputs in a combat system that resembles Paper Mario series. Plus, his writing and his story is as hilarious, clever, and angry as you'd expect from this IP, to the point where it feels anecdotal South Park film. Its sequel, Broken but wholeis also a great game, but only has “very positive” reviews on Steam.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
He changed the gaming landscape forever
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may be the third entry in Charmer series, but it's the game that put both the IP and its developer, CD Projekt Red, on the map. Even though it came out at a time when Western action RPGs were losing popularity, it still received rave reviews from fans and critics alike, and even won Game of the Year in 2015.
But what does he do? The Witcher 3 so special? This question is almost impossible to answer in a few words. Overall, it's a beautifully made RPG. A bizarre but charming pacifist RPG from Toby Fox
In 2015, Toby Fox and his team revolutionized the indie RPG scene with the release Undertalea unique turn-based RPG with bullet hell combat that encouraged players not to kill enemies and instead resolve conflicts in a pacifist manner. Combine that with its amazing soundtrack, its emotional story, its crazy sense of humor and its low price, and it's understandable why Undertale quickly became a cult classic.
To Toby Fox et al. but that was not enough. A few years later they published the first chapter Deltarunespiritual successor Undertale and the game the famous indie developer always wanted to make. Deltarune is better in every way, with a more complex combat system, better music, more colorful and detailed graphics, and a longer and more interesting plot. Persona 5 Royal
One of the best turn-based JRPGs ever made
The Persona the series has always been popular but Person 5 turned into a worldwide phenomenon with a massive fan base. Fortunately for those interested in trying it out, after several years of PlayStation exclusivity, its improved port, Persona 5 Royalwas released on Steam in 2022.
The heart and soul of this game are the Phantom Thieves, a group of teenagers who use their powers to enter the minds of corrupt people to change them for good. Apart from the brilliant concept, cute characters and interesting story, the gameplay Persona 5 Royal The combination of a dynamic turn-based combat system with a pleasant life simulation mechanic contributed to its well-deserved popularity. Finally, the stylish anime-like graphics and catchy soundtrack are another important part of its unique identity.

An accessible, addictive Rogue-like action RPG

Rogue-likes aren't for everyone, but Supergiant Games' Hades is one of the most affordable, which is why this game has been praised so much since its release in 2020. Players take control of Zagreus, son of the titular Hades, who must escape the underworld by exploring many different dungeons and defeating hordes of enemies.
The fight for Hades it's incredibly fast-paced and the progression system is satisfying as it rewards exploration, experimentation and resilience. It's also a lot of fun to befriend all the different gods and monsters from Greek mythology as they've been brought to life with beautiful art and clever writing. After all, Hades is an addictive game that was designed to be played over and over again. Now is the best time to check out this indie masterpiece, which is considered to be its direct sequel, Hades 2it just came out in September 2025.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon
As a dragon, it became an RPG franchise
The Like a Dragon games (formerly known as Yakuza) are known for being crazy, but cute for punching. However, everything changed for the franchise in 2020 with an unexpected release Yakuza: Like a dragon. This entry ditched the typical real-time action gameplay in favor of a turn-based combat system. Against all odds, it ended up being a colossal critical and commercial success.
Shifting genres within a franchise is always a controversial choice, but Like a Dragon fans embraced the turn-based RPG because it maintained everything that made the franchise so special. It's fun, dynamic, and over the top, not to mention the rest of the adventure has tons of fun secondary activities and silly distractions for the player to complete at their leisure. Fans of this game should also check out its direct sequel, 2024 Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (which isn't on this list because it has “very positive” reviews on Steam).
Baldur's Gate 3
A well-deserved win in game of the year
There are several solids Dungeons & Dragons video games on steam but Baldur's Gate 3 is probably the absolute best because it has become so big that it has even attracted players who have never tried these types of games before. This award-winning title has taken everything that makes the iconic tabletop RPG so engaging and transformed it into an addictive digital adventure.
This is obvious from the moment players create their own character Baldur's Gate 3 it's bursting with options that make each playthrough different from the last. The game features a deep combat system that changes things depending on the player character's class, background, and party. With many important decisions to make, a cast of lovable and well-written characters, and a fascinating story full of twists and turns, it should come as no surprise that Baldur's Gate 3 won the Game of the Year 2023 award. It even managed to beat other excellent titles like Tears of the Kingdom and Alan Wake 2 in process.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
A brand new IP that has captivated players around the world
The RPG genre has been dominated by famous AAA franchises for years, so it's not common for a brand new IP to become popular so quickly, especially outside of the indie scene. Fortunately, that's exactly what happened this year Clair Obscur: Expedition 33which has received so much critical acclaim that many already consider it the best game of 2025.
Developed by a team of about thirty people, the main selling point Clair Obscuro is its brilliant combat system that uses fast real-time events to make the action more engaging, refreshing and fast-paced. Its wonderful presentation, interesting and lovable characters and rich story contributed to the huge popularity of this game. After all, Clair Obscuro it's so well made and so groundbreaking that it's even managed to turn thousands of RPG haters into new fans of the genre.
