A shopper has gone viral on social media after sharing an image of an attempted Anzac Day message iced atop one of Woolworths’ beloved chocolate mudcakes.

The Aussie posted a photo of the iconic dessert in-store to Reddit, which showed the cake with the words “Lets we forget” instead of “Lest we forget” inscribed on top.

News.com.au understands the cake was a one-off decoration requested by a customer, and not a “special design” sold across all Woolworths stores. No other mudcakes with references to Anzac Day were produced.

“Nothing celebrates the Anzacs like a cheap mudcake from Woolies,” one user responded to the gaffe.

A second questioned “who buys a cake for Anzac Day anyway?”

“It’s not a party,” they added, to which a third person agreed: “Even without the typo the whole idea is tacky.”

“Still better than ‘happy Anzac Day’,” another wrote.

One user, meanwhile, wrongly accused the supermarket giant of attempting to profit off the national day of remembrance.

“All jokes aside, this is really poor behaviour on Woolworths’ part. They try to make money off what is meant to be a respectful and dignified event, but they couldn’t even get the messaging right,” they said.

“I’m going to say this is more likely a rogue staff member thinking they are doing something ‘noble’ but completely misreading the ‘vibe’ of Anzac Day,” someone else said.

It comes as Woolworths marked its 10th year of supporting the RSL’s annual ANZAC Appeal – the funds of which support veterans and their families in their time of need, through programs such as ongoing health and wellbeing, and financial welfare funds.

“The RSL and Woolworths have an ongoing and valued partnership, providing ongoing support to veterans and their families across Australia,” RSL Victoria CEO, Sue Cattermole, said in a statement.

“Over the last ten years, Woolworths has raised more than $13 million during both our ANZAC and Poppy Appeals by making badges available for purchase in stores, providing direct and crucial support to the veteran community nationwide.”
