Collingwood star Jamie Elliott pulls off all-time Anzac Day moment

The 2024 Anzac Day game between Collingwood and Essendon at the MCG was already looming as an all-time classic.

Enter, Jamie Elliott.

Midway through the third term, with the Bombers leading by 10 points, Jordan de Goey sent the ball inside 50 metres.

Elliott seemed to read the ball instantly off the boot, setting himself and then using Essendon defender Ben McKay as a stepladder to take one of the great marks the sport has seen.

As you can see in the video player above, Elliott somehow leapt straight onto McKay’s shoulders before reaching out with both arms to take the ball at its highest point.

“What about that for an Anzac Day spectacular,” James Brayshaw screamed in commentary.

The 31-year-old Elliott, who has often been the man for a big occasion, went back and kicked the goal as the murmurs from the mark still spread around the packed crowd of 93,644.

By three-quarter-time of an outstanding game, the Pies had battled back to take a one-point lead into the final change.

“Shaping as an Anzac Day special this one and, well, Jamie Elliott has just ensured that he will be there for Anzac Day highlight reels forever and a day,” Garry Lyon said on Fox Footy.

“That my friends is going to take some beating for mark of the year.”

Of course marks of this nature typically have another player that will long be remembered and this time, it was McKay.

In response to Lyon, Jonathan Brown said: “So will Ben McKay unfortunately.”

“Oh well, we’ve all been there,” Lyon shot back. “Someone has to stand under them.

“Just an extraordinary performance.”

The outpouring on social media was just as glowing for the moment of pure magic.

“Jamie Elliott with one of the best grabs you’ll ever see!” the AFL’s official account tweeted.

“If you’re not impressed with that, you wouldn’t be impressed with any hanger,” wrote another X user.

“He was in the clouds,” added a third.

“Mark of the year. My goodness,” declared a fourth.

We’ll leave the last word to the official Collingwood account on X.

“Hang this one in the Louvre,” the wrote. “And every other art gallery around the world.”
