The time of dinosaurs is coming to an end.

A new breed of electric and hybrid-powered utes is set to render enormous V8-powered machines extinct.

The wildest of them all, RAM’s TRX – named after Tyrannosaurus Rex – was consigned to history late last year.

The ultimate RAM has an enormous 6.2-litre V8 boosted by a supercharger that lifts power to 523kW and 882Nm.

Those supercar-rivalling numbers allow the Ram to reach 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, which isn’t bad for a three-tonne truck.

With the V8 destined for museum status this year, American customers will be able to pick up a similar “RHO” model powered by a less potent six-cylinder engine 403kW, 706Nm engine that has not been confirmed for Australia.

But RAM has confirmed that more than 100 examples of the TRX will come to Australia as a special “Final Edition”.

Jeff Barber, general manager of Ram Trucks Australia, said the Final Edition can be spotted with unique graphics and satin titanium bead-lock capable wheels.

On the inside, it has special stitching, embroidered seats, and more widespread use of premium materials such as suede and carbon fibre.

“The first TRX was engineered to handle the most punishing conditions with extreme capability and durability,” he said.

“These TRX Final Editions round out that legacy and we’re delighted to secure 130 of them from our colleagues at RAM Trucks International and send off the legendary 6.2-litre supercharged HEMI V8 in the style it deserves.”

The RAM TRX Final Edition costs $249,950 plus on-road costs, which is a whopping $50,000 more than the standard car cost at launch in 2022.

Those cars sold out quickly, as there is nothing else quite like the RAM.

It has a dollop of attitude you won’t find in smaller rivals such as Ford’s Ranger Raptor. The RAM even has little illustrations of T-Rex dinosaurs chasing smaller Velociraptors moulded into some of its plastics.

It represents the last high-performance V8 ute on sale, though there are still plenty of quick utes to come, judging by the performance of Ford’s F-150 Lightning and the Tesla Cybertruck.
