A member of beloved Irish rock band U2 has shocked fans after announcing a huge personal update.

The world-renowned group’s bass guitarist Adam Clayton shared that he is splitting from his wife Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho after 10 years of marriage.

The 64-year-old rock star tied the knot with the lawyer in an intimate ceremony at a Dublin registry office back in 2013.

They went on to have their daughter Alba, six, in 2017.

A spokesperson for the couple confirmed over the weekend that they had parted ways and are now “amicably divorced”.

Both of them will continue to be involved in their daughter’s life as she grows up.

“After more than 10 years of marriage, musician Adam Clayton and lawyer Mariana Teixeira de Carvalho have amicably divorced,” the statement read, according to Sunday World.

“Both will continue to be fully involved in the care of their daughter and they request that the family’s privacy be respected.”

A few days after getting married, Clayton and Teixeira de Carvalho, who was born in Brazil, celebrated their nuptials with a major three day celebration with 150 family and friends in a 14th century chateau in Mandelieu-la-Napoule, near Cannes, France.

The festivities also included a party on Bono’s yacht, Cyan.

In July 2017, they placed a personal ad in The Irish Times newspaper announcing the birth of their daughter.

“Adam and Mariana Clayton are delighted to announce the birth of their beautiful baby girl Alba,” they wrote in the announcement.

Clayton also has a son, who was born in 2010, from a previous relationship with an unnamed French woman.

The rock legend dated iconic supermodel Naomi Campbell for a few brief months back in 1994, appearing on The Late Late Show where they announced their engagement.

However, the pair ended their relationship later that year.

In 2006, Clayton was engaged to Suzie Smith, who was a former assistant to the band’s manager, but they split in February 2007.

The talented musician has been very candid over the years about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, stating that he is “unreservedly grateful” for the support he received from his U2 bandmates during those times in his life.

Clayton and Teixeira de Carvalho dated for around four years before tying the knot, with the rock star popping the question during Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro Carnival in 2012.

In June 2017 after receiving the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award for his support of the MusiCares MAP Fund, which gives musicians access to recovery treatment, Clayton revealed how his relationship with his wife began.

“I was in Brazil and I met a lawyer who was smart and beautiful. We started dating,” he said.

“I got married in sobriety to Mariana. I didn’t think that would happen. She’s never seen me drinking, but she does know me crazy.

“Thank you, Mariana, for the wonderful life we have together and for making every day more meaningful.”

He previously stated how when he checked into rehab back in the 90s, he was shocked that his bandmates stuck by him during such a dark time.

“We have a pact with each other. In our band, no one will be a casualty,” he said.

“We all come home, or none of us come home. No one will be left behind.

“Thank you for honouring that promise, and letting me be in your band.

“I was lucky because I had three friends who could see what was going on and who loved me enough to take up the slack of my failing.

“Bono, The Edge and Larry truly supported me before and after I entered recovery, and I am unreservedly grateful for their friendship, understanding and support.”

Clayton, who recently finished a residency with U2 at The Sphere venue in Las Vegas, was

featured on BBC’s Gardeners’ World last week, where he gave the show a backstage pass to the spectacular grounds of Danesmoate House, his Georgian mansion in the Dublin suburb of Rathfarnham.

The guitarist, who lives between London and Dublin, said he fell in love with the mansion, which was the recording location for U2’s 1986 album The Joshua Tree, the record that propelled them into global stardom.

He reportedly bought the property for €380,000 [AUD$620,400] back in 1988, when he was just 28 years old.

Clayton has been with the band since its inception in 1976, going on to receive 22 Grammy Awards and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
