A 10-year-old girl has allegedly been stabbed to death by her sister.

Emergency services rushed to reports of a stabbing at a home on Thurston St, Boolaroo, in the Lake Macquarie region of NSW about 3.45pm on Monday.

The 10-year-old girl was treated by paramedics for multiple stab wounds but died at the scene, NSW Police said in a statement.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District arrested a 17-year-old girl at the home.

She was taken to Belmont Police Station and is assisting police with inquiries.

It is understood the 17-year-old is the older sister of the younger girl.

Police have established a crime scene and continue to investigate.
