An Aussie radio host broke down in tears live on-air after sharing a heartbreaking interaction she had with a woman recently.

After attending a domestic violence rally in Perth over the weekend, HIT WA host, Carly Portch broke down on air recounting a story of a woman, Claire, who she met at the march.

Claire’s friend was tragically killed only last week at the hands of a domestic partner while he was out on bail.

Portch cried during the broadcast as she told listeners that she doesn’t “ever want to hear a story like that again”.

“Right across the country women and men were protesting against violence against women,” she said.

“Today, the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, came out and said that this is a national emergency and I would agree. 32 women have lost their lives to men’s violence since the start of 2024.”

Portch then shared some audio of her interaction with Claire, who shared her tragic story.

“I’m here because of the abject failure that allowed a dangerous man to get bail and kill my friend,” the woman told the radio host. “She passed away on Monday.”

“It’s outrageous that this is still something we deal with, that we have to be out here doing this. When will we be safe?!”

As the audio clip came to an end, a visibly emotional Portch then began to breakdown as she shared her heartbreak over the chance meeting.

“Monday. That was her friend,” she said while tears ran down her cheeks.

“If that doesn’t show how much domestic violence is reaching every person in this country, that I can turn to a stranger and that is her story.”

Of the 32 women who have so far lost their lives at the hands of domestic violence, eleven of those alleged murders have occurred in the last 24 days alone.

“If that doesn’t hit home, that this is a national emergency that we need to address …. I don’t know what does?” she continued.

“I thought about that girl all last night. And I know this is such a heavy topic to bring to the show, but we need to keep talking about this. We need to get answers.

“She went on to call on the government to bring about change that will help to protect victims of domestic violence.

“Parliament is meeting on Wednesday. They’re bringing all the state leaders together to finally put this on the table and I know it’s been put on the table – I know things and measures have been put in place, but they’re not good enough.”

She continued: “We’ve had enough. We need the stats to change, we need this country’s attitude to change. We need to address this. And that’s everyone – men and women”.

“We need as a country to say enough is enough. I don’t want to turn to the woman next to me ever again and hear a story like that ever again.”
