One of Melbourne’s most iconic eateries is doing the dirty on its home city – by opening its doors in Sydney.

Lune Croissanterie, located on the corner of Russell St and Flinders Lane, is known for its lengthy lines and sold out pastries.

But while Aussies travel from other states in order to taste the famed croissants, just as many locals are willing to queue in order to take home a baked Lune treat, proving just how beloved the eatery is by Melbournites.

However, Lune – which has been dubbed “one of Melb’s finest” – has announced it is “finally” opening its doors in Sydney after securing a venue at the historic Rosebery Engine Yards.

Kate Reid, who launched the popular bakery in 2012, said she’d been looking for a spot in Sydney for a while, but “fate” intervened, and nothing had been concrete until now.

“I’ve decided, no more am I willing to wait and see what the hands of fate have dealt me,” she wrote on Lune’s official Instagram page.

“I’m taking matters into my own hands, because, in 2024 I want to call Sydney home. ⁠

“I discovered a spot in your lovely Rosebery, and it felt familiar and right. It was old and industrial, like my Fitzroy digs, and had plenty of space for all the things that make Lune so special. I actually loved it so much that I decided to move in.”

The venue is currently being renovated to turn it into a “croissant wonderland” but it is due to open in Spring 2024.

Interestingly, the new store will become the brand’s “new flagship”, a move that will likely be received as an ever-so-slight sledge towards its home city of Melbourne.

Understandably, Sydneysiders have been overjoyed by the news, with many declaring: “Now we don’t have to go to Melbourne.”

“We have longed for your arrival,” one delighted user wrote.

“The best news,” agreed another.

“OMG, Lune in Sydney has been long awaited,” someone else chipped in.

As one simply shared: “FINALLY!!!!”

Lune started as a tiny hole-in-the-wall in the suburb of Elwood in more than 11 years ago. The bakery is known for drawing queues for its “shatteringly crisp” and buttery croissants.

Many have shared drool-worthy videos and photos of the “must-try” products, including the famous croissants as well as “cruffins” – a mix between a croissant and a muffin.

While many declared Lune’s croissants, which are priced between $7.10 and $10.80, “top tier”, others have claimed the products are “overpriced and overhyped”.

Lune currently has three stores in Melbourne and two in Brisbane. A second Sydney store at Metro Martin Place will also open this year.
