Police in riot gear have blocked protesters from reaching the star-studded Met Gala in New York.

Over 1000 anti-Israel demonstrators marched through upper Manhattan towards the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the Met Gala is in full swing, NY Post reported.

The crowd was first diverted into Central Park and police blocked the exits.

“This is an exercise in futility at this point. There’s nowhere for them to go,” a cop attempting to corral the crowd was heard telling his partner.

Hundreds of Pro-Palestine protesters sprint towards Met Gala event

As protesters then filed out of the park and were within sight of the Met, dozens of police formed a blockade — standing two officers deep — preventing them from heading north.

“Is that the Met?” one protester asked a friend. “Oh no, we were so close.”

The group tried to reach the Met Gala from other directions but were stopped by more police barricades.

NY Post reported police made at least a dozen arrests and officers were seen tackling at least one woman to the ground while someone chucked a water bottle at the police.

“Who do you serve? Who do you protect?” the group shouted in a chant.

Pro-Palestinian protests have rocked US university campuses for weeks and this crowd had set out from Hunter College, where the Palestinian activist group Within Our Lifetime called for a “Day of Rage” protest to form and then march towards the Met.

The Met Gala was expected to be the target of demonstrations.

For the Oscars in March, protesters caused traffic to stand still on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Some Oscars attendees ditched their cars to continue to the Dolby Theatre on foot.

As actor Mark Ruffalo showed up for the 96th Academy Awards he shouted his support for pro-Palestinian protesters who made him late.

Ruffalo, who was nominated for best supporting actor for his role in Poor Things, shouted at the press as he rushed past: “It’s starting. We’re late. We’re late. The Palestinian protest shut down the Oscars tonight. Humanity wins.”

The 56-year-old also wore a red Artists4Ceasefire pin calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

One reporter urged Ruffalo to answer one question about Gaza as he rushed to the event, with the actor stopping to quickly share his thoughts.

“We have to come to peace, we need peace, we need a ceasefire … we need hostages brought back, we need to stop killing children, we need a ceasefire,” he said.
