Another Sony status, another month of disappointment for PSVR2 owners

This year, Sony launched and shelved (reportedly, albeit with a few heaps of salt) a $400 million game after less than two weeks, then announced a $700 PS5 upgrade that doesn't come with a disc drive. Despite these fumbles, I argued that Sony's biggest L this year was its complete lack of support for the PS VR2, a $550 headset sold to people last year without any games. Say what you will about the PS5 Pro, but at least you can play Spider-Man 2 on it. Concord customers got a full refund when the servers went down. Do you think Sony will refund PS VR2 customers? No, but it definitely should.




Embarrassingly, over a year and a half after the launch of the PS VR2, it still has no games. Apart from the launch titles Horizon Call of the Mountain, Synapse and The Dark Pictures: Switchback, the only PS VR2 exclusives are the VR versions of Resident Evil 8, Resident Evil 4 Remake and Gran Turismo 7. Everything else you can play on Quest: Portable VR Headset , which doesn't require a $500 console and costs $50 less than the PS VR2.

When Behemoth and Alien: Rogue Incursion were the only VR games in the last State of Play, it seemed like Sony had already put the PS VR2 out to pasture, just waiting to pull the trigger. This week's State of the Game featured three different VR games that might seem like improvements at first glance, but it's the same old story: cross-platform games that are better played elsewhere.


First up was The Midnight Walk, a surreal fantasy-adventure game from the creators of Lost in Random. I liked (but didn't like) Lost in Random and the gritty style of The Midnight Walk combines Tim Burton's grim and dark aesthetic with Laika's signature style. I love both of those things, so I'll probably like this one too. If it was a PS VR2 exclusive that would definitely move the needle for me, but it's also coming to PCVR via Steam which means I can play it on my Quest 3 via Air Link very easily.


Metro Awakening also got a trailer during the showcase. It comes from Vertigo Games, the studio behind Arizona Sunshine. It looks authentically Metro and I'm excited to play it in November, but I'll be playing it on my Quest 3 so I don't have to stand in my living room with a giant cable attached to my PS5. If I'm going to deal with the inconvenience of the PS VR2, it has to offer a unique or superior experience, but in all cases of cross-platform gaming, the Quest is better for you.

The recently revealed Quest 3S is an affordable headset capable of playing the exclusive Quest 3. At $299, it's yet another reason to trade in the PS VR2, or rather never buy one.

Finally, Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded will be released on PS VR2 in December. Quest has been out for almost a month. It's bad enough that PS VR2 can't offer any exclusives, but waiting for new games that have already launched on other platforms is just adding insult to injury.


It's surprising that Sony doesn't have any exclusives to show for a year and a half after the launch of the PS VR2. I can't believe we live in a world where Meta, not PlayStation, is launching an exclusive new Batman Arkham game this year. With Meta you get Assassin's Creed Nexus VR, Asgard's Wrath 2, Lego Bricktales, Sniper Elite VR and many more exclusives, plus the benefits of a wireless headset. With the PS VR2, you get the occasional modified VR mode for Resident Evil and a lot of broken promises.
