Zoan Devil Fruits are said to have a will of their own, even before they are consumed. This seems to partly explain the fascinating phenomenon of inanimate objects being able to “consume” the Zoan. This was apparently a method discovered by Dr. Vegapunk some time before the main story.

One Piece: 5 Important Artifacts That Are Not One Piece
The One Piece is just one of many artifacts with untold meaning. Here are a few others that are important in this beloved anime.
Like any living thing that consumes a Zoan, inanimate objects can take on the characteristics of the animal whose Devil Fruit they consumed. Unfortunately, they also have weaknesses associated with being a living being, such as pain, fear, and vulnerability to disease. All these objects are completely loyal to their owners.
6 Lasso
Babe's Bazooka
- Devil Fruit: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Dachshund
- Debut: Chapter 160 (Manga), Episode 103 (Anime)
Babe, otherwise known as Mr. 4 in Baroque works, is the first person known to own a Zoan object. His Lassoo dachshund bazooka fires explosive baseballs weighing the same as the cannonballs that Babe fires with his mighty 4-ton baseball bat. Lassoo is very obedient and is willing to shoot when his owner asks. Since his escape from prison, Babe has fulfilled his dream of becoming a pizza delivery boy, working as one at the recently reopened Spiders Cafe. Lasoo serves as the cafe's mascot.
It is unclear how exactly Babe came into Lassoo's possession. Despite his strength, Babe is remarkably unintelligent, so much so that Crocodile gave the weaker Galdin a higher rank than him. It is possible that despite being categorized as a recent breakthrough, the actual science behind the creation of the Zoan object is easily replicable. If the Zoans have a mind of their own, it's equally possible that Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Dachshund simply wanted possession of Babe's weapon.
5 Funkfree
Spandam's sword
- Devil Fruit: Zou Zou no Mi
- Debut: Chapter 365 (Manga), Episode 254 (Anime)
Spandam is a completely incompetent World Government agent who took his previous leadership positions at Cipher Pol 9 and 5 more for nepotism than any real skill. He is hated by his own colleagues and those who have been wronged as a result of his and his father's actions. Even though the world government was the one who gave him the level of protection he has, he even conspired to overthrow them and wasn't punished too severely when he failed. He is the second known owner of the Zoan object, owning an Elephant Sword named Funkfreed.
Funkfreed is Spandam's only companion and probably his only form of defense, due to his own poor physical strength. Spandam is not very skilled in swordsmanship, meaning that Funkfreed is essentially without his direct assistance in most fights. Like his owner, Funkfreed is quite a coward and a poor fighter. This is reflected in the friendly and unassuming appearance of the elephant-like sword. While Funkfreed's backstory is not elaborated upon, it is shown that Spandam had a pet elephant as a child, perhaps cementing his affinity for the animal.
4 Smiley
Caesar the Clown's Poison Gas
- Devil Fruit: Sara Sara no Mi, Model: Axolotl
- Debut: Chapter 668 (Manga), Episode 594 (Anime)
Caesar Clown is a scientist who formerly worked alongside Dr. Vegapunk. Unlike his counterpart, Caesar is known to be deeply unethical and care little whether others live or die as a result of his actions. Smiley is one of his many deadly experiments. The creature originated as an illegal chemical weapon of mass destruction that Caesar detonated at Punk Hazard.
When Caesar returned to the island, he compressed the HS2 gas from the explosion into slime, which he then “fed” to the Devil Fruit, thus “birthing” Smiley. This proves that Zoan Fruits can be “eaten” by things that aren't purely solid. Caesar decided to release Smiley to kill the Straw Pirates and the G-5 Marines who were on the island. A purely toxic being, she killed Caesar's men when she was released as well. It was eventually countered but not defeated by Luffy and his companions.

During One Piece, these disgusting pirates fought alongside Monkey D. Luffy to face a greater enemy.
Instead, Caesar killed the creature himself by feeding it a substance that resembled wrapped candy. This put Smiley in excruciating pain and turned his “corpse” into a fossilized gas known as Shinokuni. This makes Smiley the first Zoan inanimate object to “die” in the series. A nearby apple has turned into a devil fruit after Smiley's death, which probably means Sara Sara no Mi, Model: Axolotl can now be claimed by another.
3 Bunbuk
Kozuki Sukiyaki teapot
- Devil Fruit: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Tanuki
- Debut: Chapter 911 (Manga), Episode 894 (Anime)
Kozuki Sukiyaki was the former Shogun of Wano Country and the previous Daimyo of Kuri. He is also the father of the late Kozuki Oden. Since being deposed, Sukiyaki has been hiding and living under the alias Tenguyama Hitecu. During this time, he acted as a mentor to Kurozumi Tama, despite the historical enmity between their clans. After Momonosuke was installed as shogun and regained power for the Kozuki clan, Sukiyaki remained in hiding, revealing himself to only a select few. As a hermit, he is the owner of the most recently identified Zoan object in canon, a Tanuki kettle called Bunbuku.
The Bunbuku is notable as the only Zoan cannon object that has not yet been a weapon of some kind. Instead, it was a simple teapot that Sukiyaki possessed before her transformation. Its name is a reference to Bunbuku Chagamaa Japanese folk tale about a tanuki who becomes a teapot. Since Bunbuku is now a living being, it cannot be used to boil water as it would harm him. Bunbuku instead appears as Sukiyaki and Tama's pet, usually accompanying one or the other at certain points in the story.
2 alpacacino
Shuzo's Bazooka
- Devil Fruit: Currently untitled
- Debut: Episode 575
- Note: This character is not canon
Shuzo was a longarm who was formerly a member of the Neo Marines, a splinter movement created by Z, a former admiral who felt the marines had not done enough to punish the pirates. He wishes to usurp the position of second-in-command in the organization from Ain, despite having bested him in their battle for the position. As a result, he refuses to follow her orders. Shuzo was eventually defeated by Luffy and subsequently arrested by Vice Admiral Momonga, who claimed to be sent to Impel Down.

One Piece: 5 Characters modeled from Pop Culture
Oda modeled some of his characters from figures within popular culture. Below are some examples.
Alpacacino is Shuzo's Alpaca Bazooka. Like the lasso, transforming into an animal does not prevent its bazooka functionality. Alpacacino tends to nod in agreement with his owner, though he doesn't seem above criticizing Shuzo when necessary, such as when he reveals their Neo-Marine identities. His name is probably derived from the iconic American actor Al Pacino.
1 Pato
Patrick Redfield pen
- Devil Fruit: Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Bake-danuki
- Debut: One Piece: Unlimited World Red
- Note: This character is not canon
Patrick “Red” Redfield was a pirate who in his prime was considered a rival to the likes of Roger and Whitebeard. However, his own lack of subsequent impact has made him far less well-known than either of them ever since. Red was formerly a level 6 prisoner in Impel Down, inadvertently freed by Teach during his attempt to recruit level 6 prisoners for the Blackbeard Pirates.
Red's longtime companion is Pato, Bake-danuki Pen. While Pato's Devil Fruit has similar roots to Bunbuku's, it is distinguished by being a mythical Zoan, while Bunbuku's Devil Fruit is based on a real-life Tanuki. Pato can turn leaves into objects and people by writing on them with a tail that looks like the tip of a pen. Pato was previously separated from Red after his imprisonment. When Red ran away, he disrespected his former companion and believed that Pato had abandoned him.
However, after Monkey D. Luffy gains his respect, Red decides to rekindle his friendship with Pat, with the two becoming companions once again. Pato is the alias Red was known by as a rookie, suggesting that he is of great value to him. Pato is relatively unique when it comes to inanimate object Zoans, as he is capable of speech.
