Assassin's Creed Mirage is off to a rough start on Steam after launching to a much lower peak player count than recent entries in the series. Although Assassin's Creed Mirage has been available on other PC stores since October 2023, it was recently released on Steam after a year of waiting.
For many players, Assassin's Creed Mirage presented a great opportunity to jump back into a long-running series that took a new RPG approach with posts Origins, Odysseyand Valhalla. Assassin's Creed Mirage received positive reviews from critics and was generally regarded as a solid return to the series' roots. It was basically what many fans have been calling for over the years. The player count charts on SteamDB don't paint a pretty picture for the early days Assassin's Creed MirageSteam release. On the first Saturday after release, when it was expected to retain the most players, the game peaked at 6,381 players at the time of writing. Looking at recent games in Assassin's Creed series, Origins peaked at 41,551 players, Odyssey on 62,069 a Valhalla to 15,679. That's a significant drop Assassin's Creed Mirage. In the interest of justice Valhalla is the only game in the RPG trio that didn't have a first day release on Steam, which explains its own lower number.
The number of players on Steam in Assassin's Creed Mirage is lower than the number of recent records
To put these numbers into perspective, right at the time of writing, Assassin's Creed Mirage currently has 3,691 players. Assassin's Creed Odysseywhich was released in 2018 has 3,370. Of course, these rough early numbers are subject to change, but they are certainly surprising, especially considering Assassin's Creed Mirage launched on Steam with a steep 50% discount, dropping to $24.99 until October 24th.
No doubt the numbers are skewed by the delayed Steam release, but that won't be a problem for Ubisoft games going forward. Assassin's Creed Shadows will launch day one on Steam, as will most of the publisher's games going forward, which should make a big difference in making the player base look much healthier for the series. It's going to be a busy couple of years for the series as a whole. A recent rumor suggested that ten Assassin's Creed games are slated to come out in the next five years, which would be a big jump for a series that hasn't released a main title in either 2021 or 2022. Let's wait and see if that works out.
