Neil Newbon plunged another light on how he broke into the gaming industry and shared how he saved his acting career. Before working to capture movement in games like Detroit: Become a human and resident Evil 3, Newbon says he had £ 34,000 in debt and tried to wrap more roles.
It comes from Newbon's Ted Talk called: How to capture performance saved my life. Here, Newbon gives us another insight into his career starting on television before it happens to pour into the game industry.
Neil Newbon explains how to capture him in the games of saving him from debt
“I had a debt worth 34,000 GBP, I lived in a really frantic place,” says Newbon. “I found out that I was not only bitter and cynicism, but also the envy of my peers who did fantastically well. Things were really bad.
“I stand in my room, look out the window, two bank letters in my hand, the second magazine,” he continues. “The bank letter says,” We will sue you if you do not pay, and we will bankrupt you and it will be terrible. “But also the second letter is a useful loan for consolidation from the same bank with a high interest.”
Newbon says he dropped the letters and instead turned to the magazine, a copy of the PC Gamer. It was here that he read an article about actor Lara Croft Keeley Hawes, which he first learned of capturing movement. He thought it was something he could do, and so he persecuted it, even though many doubted it was a smart career step in his life.
“No one believed in it,” he explains. “Former friendly, former lovers, former agents, even some family members. They just thought it was a bad idea. But my instinct of the intestines I lost a long time ago and told me it was a way forward.”
It can be said with certainty that it was the best decision for his career because he found a great success in playing. His biggest role so far was as Astarion in the Baldur Gate 3, playing one of the six main characters next to Jennifer English, Tim Downie, Theo Solomon, Samantha Béart and Devora Wilde. Newbon's performance as Astarion saw him won the best performance at the Golden Joystick Awards in 2023.
