Each pairing takes center stage for several episodes, and their dynamic is unique enough from each other to make them stand out. Now that's an engaging title that might also turn off a few people who aren't already invested in BL stories. Cherry Magic! Can thirty years of virginity turn you into a wizard?! It sounds pretty silly, but the show uses its ridiculous premise to cleverly explore stereotypes and archetypes. Being a 30-year-old virgin, Adachi gains the ability to read minds, which makes him discover that his super cool and popular colleague Kurosawa has a big crush on him. Having never really considered going in this direction, Adachi doesn't know how to process this information and ends up unable to decide whether to approach Kurosawa or keep his distance.

Kurosawa is the star of the show. Adachi's ability provides deep insight into his collaborator's psyche and struggles, peeling back the “public” persona that Kurosawa presents. Cherry Magic features several scenes that feel like a throwback to the aggressive BL anime of yesteryear that involved one dominant partner, but are subverted by Kurosawa's thought process that emphasizes his insecurity, fear, and kind nature. Adachi and Kurosawa's friendship and eventual romance develop surprisingly naturally, considering the bizarre psychological element, and are not Cherry Magicis only BL dynamic.

The ending of the anime has an unnecessary and rushed time jump, suggesting that a sequel is unlikely to happen. That's disappointing. Fortunately, the manga continues.

2 Given Movie 2: Hiiragi Mix

Echoes of the past and the approaching future

Given not only is he one of the best anime-loving boys of all time, but he also arguably helped launch the genre's current renaissance period. Sasaki and Miyano. While mostly healthy, welcome home it also explores themes such as prejudice, specifically through Masaki's internalized hatred stemming from experiences of discrimination. Omegas are generally looked down upon, and Masaki fears that his children may suffer the same fate. Crucially, he also fears that he might transfer his insecurities and traumas onto them.
