Black Ops 6 Zombies can't let the Wunderwaffe be Chekhov's weapon

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is set to release on October 25, 2024 and will feature the highly anticipated Zombies Liberty Falls map. This map will feature the classic Zombies round game set in a small town in West Virginia. While the Ray Gun and Jet Gun are confirmed to be available in the mystery box, the absence of one main weapon in the initial game Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a hot topic among fans.

The weapon in question is the Wunderwaffe, and since it was featured in the Liberty Falls trailer, players are still hoping that it will make an appearance in the game in some way, though it's not clear how yet. However, it's also possible that it won't appear at all, and the franchise can treat this single trailer as an Easter Egg, as it has in the past.

Why the Wunderwaffe should be in Call of Duty Black Ops 6

Since the Ray Gun and Jet Gun are already in the Mystery Box in Liberty Falls, the absence of the Wunderwaffe v Call of Duty seems like a strange omission, especially when you bring it up. However, if it's not on the map at all, it could potentially be saved for future maps or updates, although it's not as satisfying for players hoping to get their hands on it now.

Plus, it would be disappointing if it wasn't in the game, especially when the franchise is selling one in relation to Black Ops 6 with camouflage Call of Duty MWZ. This also reinforces the idea that it wouldn't take much effort to pull this off. Selling the camo and teasing in the trailer without actually making the weapon available might seem like a huge missed opportunity for the franchise, both from a fan service and marketing perspective.

Call of Duty has previously teased weapons that never made it

Cinematic intro for Origins (from Black Ops II) briefly shows the Olympia shotgun during a cutscene. However, despite this tease, it is not an available weapon in the actual game. This comes after the fact that Olympia has been a common starting weapon in the past Call of Duty Zombie maps (like Kino der Toten and Nacht der Untoten) but were missing in Origins.

Similarly, in Mob of the Dead (also from Black Ops 2), the Python revolver is seen in the opening movie while being used by the main characters. Still, like Olympia in Origins, Python is missing from the actual game.

Wunderwaffe could be incorporated via easter eggs

Having the Wunderwaffe as part of an easter egg quest where players could drop down to where Richtofen was in the opening after completing the main quest and get it could be a nostalgic and satisfying throwback. This concept works well with tradition Call of Duty Zombies Easter eggs where players work through complex steps to unlock secret locations or weapons.

Having the Wunderwaffe that Edward Richtofen dropped and locked away, only to be retrieved via a post easter egg event also fits perfectly with the zombie lore and kind of narrative. Black Ops fans would appreciate it too. This idea also echoes the Call of the Dead easter egg, where the Wunderwaffe was unlocked as a reward. However, it should be taken with a grain of salt, as the needles so far only indicate that the Wunderwaffe may never make it to the final game. Especially since the franchise has previously tended to treat the look of one trailer as Chekhov's never-firing guns.

Chekhov's pistol is a principle of the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, who famously said: If you hung a gun on the wall in the first act, then in the next act you should shoot. Otherwise, don't put it there.
