When asked how PlayStation can compete with PC gaming, three key Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) figures said the PlayStation 6 experience should move outside the living room. PlayStation has outlined some of the key points of how it plans to allow users to enjoy games away from the sofa.
The news comes amid a controversial period for the PlayStation brand. In early July, Sony announced that games released after January 2028 would no longer receive physical disc copies. The move caused a storm on social media as several users and companies criticized PlayStation amid a push for digital exclusivity. Although PlayStation has since clarified that it will support physical reprints of games released before January 2028, that hasn't stopped users and other companies from continuing to pressure Sony to reconsider its stance.

PlayStation wants to push the brand beyond the living room
Days before Sony revealed its plans to go full digital, the company clarified how it plans to bring back gamers who primarily play on PC. SIE President and CEO Hideaki Nishino, Studio Business CEO Hermen Hulst and Senior Vice President of Finance and Development Lynn Azar were asked in a translated Q&A in June about how the company can bring back to PlayStation users who migrated to PC during the COVID-19 pandemic. While it's not clear which figurine answered the question, Sony acknowledged how the PlayStation brand was heavily associated with the idea of playing video games in the living room. Sony has stated that the PS6 will aim to provide value unique to the PlayStation brand, rather than being “an alternative to PCs”. Although SIE has stated that it would use technological advances and the expansion of usage styles, it is not clear what this means.

However, Sony also said it noticed some console gamers using gaming monitors as a way to play their favorite titles instead. In response to the growing trend, SIE said it started selling gaming monitors and speakers to break out of the “PlayStation equals the living room” perception that has served the company well since the 1990s. One such peripheral is the upcoming PS5 Gaming Monitor, a 27″ display that will feature a DualSense charging hook that can be used to easily recharge the DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers. The PS5 Gaming Monitor will be released on August 27, though pre-orders are currently available for $349 via PlayStation Direct.
Although Sony has discussed its plans going forward, the company has been tight-lipped about revealing too many details about the PS6 console. However, Sony's move towards releasing digital-only games may have inadvertently revealed that the PS6 is unlikely to have a disc drive. Given that Sony's limited window for releasing new physical games is January 2028, it's also unlikely that the next-gen PlayStation console will be released before then.
