It's been three years since Sega told us to look forward to a Crazy Taxi revival, and since then there's been almost no mention of it. It turns out that despite three years of radio silence, fans of the original game are still pretty excited, as you can tell from the reactions to the Crazy Taxi Twitter account revival.
Crazy Taxi is almost back
On Thursday, Sega used a dormant Twitter account to share a video of a flashing taxi light. No caption, but a heavy implication that the revival promised in 2023 may finally be almost ready to show off. There's no sound, which is a missed opportunity if you ask me. Scoring a five-second video with “Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah” that opens The Offspring's All I Want may have broken the internet (positively).
Whether Sega's new vision for Crazy Taxi includes the music that helped it remain so iconic more than 20 years later is still unclear. Even now, with the tease that a proper game update is coming, we still have no idea what the game will be. It can be a remaster or remake of the original game, or a full-fledged reimagined sequel.
Will we see a crazy taxi at the summer show?
It's also unclear how much of this game Sega is going to show in the near future, but you'd hope that three years after it was announced and after showing us what is arguably the highlight of the game taxi, we're going to at least get a proper trailer. With so many showcases coming up in the next two weeks, it seems likely that Crazy Taxi will be making an appearance soon.
The Crazy Taxi demo comes a week after Sega revealed that its so-called super game is no longer happening. This super game, which was supposed to have a budget of almost 1 billion dollars, was never properly revealed. It is believed that this was some sort of live service project that Sega may have steered away from after seeing how these types of projects have worked out for other studios in recent years.
The scrapped supergame news was coupled with confirmation that Sega would focus on its “core IPs” instead. While that likely means series like Sonic, Persona and Like A Dragon, it looks like plans to give some of their older properties a modern coat of paint will continue. It started with Shinobi last year via the fantastic Art of Vengeance, and it looks like Crazy Taxi is next, with revivals of Golden Ax and Jet Set Radio also among the games listed, when Sega first confirmed it would be making a new Crazy Taxi game.
