Criminally overlooked must-play FPS masterpieces

There are too many great games out there. If someone spends every minute of their life playing video games, they can experience about 15% of the worthwhile projects released over a decade, and that's an optimistic number. Simply put, everyone loses a few masterpieces that fly under their radar or get buried in an endless backlog. Don't let these great FPS games be one of them.

There are so many first-person shooters, especially on PC, that only a few titles a year manage to stick their heads out of the crowd and make their presence known. Aside from a few classics, older mid-range titles quickly fade into obscurity, replaced by the latest hotness that eventually suffers the same fate. As someone with a soft spot for AA releases, I love revisiting forgotten gems from the late 2000s, and FPS games from that era have aged better than most other genres. Do you like a good shooter? Play these games.

I want to cover a number of reasons why the game may be overlooked these days. They are mainly divided into three categories:

Games Nobody lives forever

The Curse Of Publisher Hell

Let's get the most famous deleted FPS games out of the way right away. Honestly, it's really criminal Operative: Nobody lives forever and its continuation, No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in HARM's Waythey have now been removed longer than when they were available for purchase. Deadly stuck in ownership limbo, the franchise reportedly belongs to several publishers, none of whom seem to be able to definitively prove their case.

Street running in Killzone 2

Major FPS game franchises that are officially done

There was a time when FPS reigned supreme and these franchises were on top of the world, but today they are all dead and buried.

As a result, two of the biggest FPS titles of the 2000s are essentially erased from existence except for some physical PS2 copies (the sequel never even came out on the console). Even worse, this legal nonsense essentially left Cate Archer, a character who seemed poised to stand alongside Lara Croft and Samus as one of gaming's best female protagonists. Although somewhat dated by today's standards, both games haven't lost an iota of their charm and are still 100% worth playing.

Black

Absurdly impressive for a PS2 and Xbox FPS game

Black

Released

February 28, 2006

You had to be there, man. Looking through the lens of 2026 Black can't be fully appreciated because its strongest points – incredible graphics and destructible environments – aren't as impressive as they were in 2006. Even back then, Criterion's game was flying under the radar as a result of being exclusive to hardware on the brink of obsolescence. It also offered no multiplayer and a single player campaign that lasted maybe 6 hours.

But make no mistake, Black it was and still is absolutely stunning when played on the intended hardware (or by other means…not that I know anything about that). Honestly, the Xbox and especially the PS2 shouldn't be able to launch this type of blockbuster video game, especially one that allows players to destroy the entire environment long before. Battlefield embraced the concept. Non-stop action from start to finish, Black it may not last long, but it makes every second feel like a set piece.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway

Masterpiece of WWII

We got one in the last decade Brothers in arms game: Pinball spin-off. That's just depressing.

A few decent mobile titles aside, 2008 Hell's highway is the last true entry in the series, and that could be true for a long time since we haven't heard anything about a proper new game in the last 5 years. Three main games – Road to hill 30, Earned in bloodand Hell's highway – come together to create a legendary WW2 trilogy that can stand side by side Medal of Honor at its best.

You should play all three games, but Hell's highway is at its most enjoyable in 2026, and its sim-style approach sets it apart from most modern shooters. Rather than Rambo, players take on the role of a platoon leader who relies on authentic military tactics to survive; a run-and-gun approach will just kill you. Touching on themes of PTSD and survivor's guilt, the story hits hard and features some of the best character writing of its era.

All Brothers in arms the main games are readily available on Steam, making them easy to pick up and play.

Uniqueness

FPS wonder

When a publisher removes a game, there is basically no turnover. Well, it seems miracles are real Uniqueness he went to hell and back again. Although enjoying a positive reception, Uniqueness never became a cult classic on the same level as Bulletstorm or Syndicatealthough it is probably better than both. Seriously, Uniqueness it only has 3000 english reviews on steam. It came out in 2010.

BioShock Infinite

10 Best Linear FPS Games for Open World Tired Gamers

If another open-world game sounds like an exhausting proposition, these linear FPS campaigns are short, sweet, and immensely satisfying.

Coming out at a time when FPS mechanics were already codified, the game handles incredibly well and still plays great. More importantly, its main gimmick, time manipulation, still sets it apart from the crowd, especially when it comes to triple-A shooters. With TMDs, you can age a Soviet soldier by decades or freeze bullets in mid-air. Just a great concept well executed.

Resistance 3

Forgotten PS3 blockbuster

As an IP, Resistance not necessarily sleeping but The fall of man It seems to take up most of the retrospective love. Rightly so, because Insomniac has put together one of the best shooters of the PS3 generation. The sequel offered more of the same, but slightly worse, and ushered in a much more competitive scene. Until then Resistance 3it was clear that the franchise would not be replicated or replaced Halo soon, a prospect that proved true when Sony hit the brakes after 2012.

Unlike its predecessor, Resistance 3 attempted to evolve the series from a military epic into a gritty road trip shooter and moved it further from Halo's blueprint. It feels like first person at times The last of usas you travel through post-apocalyptic America on a desperate, last-gasp mission to change the fate of humanity. Although it's not exactly horror, the atmospheric levels are downright creepy at times, and the game relies far more on stunning backdrops.

PS Plus Premium has Resistance 3if you don't mind streaming.

aliens vs. Predator (2010)

Three for the price of one

“Overlooked” might be a bit of a stretch, but 2010 aliens vs. Predator it exists in the shadow of the 1999 release, one of the greatest licensed games of all time. With Rebellion Developments handling both projects, the 2010 title feels very much like an updated version of its ancestor, even going so far as to include three campaigns that let you play as either a Marine, Predator, or Xenomorph. Although not as groundbreaking as its spiritual predecessor, aliens vs. Predator is phenomenal and basically offers a three-in-one epic that comes together quite seamlessly at times.

  • The Marine campaign is a pure horror shooter.

  • The Predator campaign relies on stealth action.

  • The Alien campaign focuses much more on moving quickly.

The game flawlessly captures the cinematic tone of both franchises. It doesn't shy away from the jaw-dropping, chest-spinning, spine-tingling violence that the films are known for. Although the controls can be a bit finicky at times, aliens vs. Predator it succeeds in making you feel like its iconic monsters.

aliens vs. Predator it's still easy to buy on Steam.

Legendary

Look, I just love it

Here it is: “Bad” game. Legendary it has a 47 on Metacritic and a 56% on Steam. All evidence points to an underwhelming shooter that should be abandoned in 2008. A few months ago, I went through a phase of only playing maligned games from the late 2000s. Legendary to be one of them. I went in fully prepared to drop the game if I didn't find any joy. Instead I played it continuously for about 6 hours and finished it in a single day.

Legendary is the definition of “silly fun” and is basically a B-grade schlock fest with a triple-A shooter presentation. After opening Pandora's box, the world is overrun with mythological monsters, including a skyscraper-sized entity that makes the opening sequence chaotic and epic. Aside from perhaps having too many werewolves, the monster list is more than varied and creative enough to keep the campaign fresh throughout. While not amazing, the shooting is fine and shouldn't be hard to pick up and play these days.

We just don't have games like that Legendary already; you know, the mid-budget single player versions that swing for the fences. Is it really a masterpiece? Probably not, but it almost lives up to its name.

If you're like me and have been collecting decks for about 15 years, you may already own a copy Legendary. If not, it's available on Steam and occasionally sells for less than $1.
