Key things
- The Beast is Techland's latest project in its Dying Light franchise, bringing back fan favorite Kyle Crane for a new solo adventure.
- The adventure was born out of some malicious leaks, though Techland says it “remotivated” them when it came to Dying Light.
- Elsewhere, a Techland member called the project a dream.
While Dying Light: The Beast was largely created as a response to leaks, the upcoming DLC, which became a standalone title, reinvigorated Techland in all the best ways. This energy has made the Polish video game developer and publisher want to keep feeding their zombie-based franchise.
In an interview with Play Magazine and as transcribed by GamesRadar , director Tymon Smektala shared that the team is “remotivated” since shifting gears to turn The Beast from DLC into its own thing. According to Smektal, The Beast “remotivated us to work on Dying Light.”
The leaks could have been harmful
For those who may not remember, Techland has had a number of leaks ahead of the release of Dying Light 2 in 2022. In addition to details on the first two hours of the yet-to-be-released game, future plans and concepts have also been revealed. reluctantly including things for what is now The Beast.
The team at Techland didn't want to continue business as usual, especially knowing that its most dedicated Dying Light fans were likely exposed to leaks, either by choice or via bad actors. As a result, The Beast was born from some of the ideas that were planned, along with some new concepts.
Kyle Crane is back and art director Katarzyna Tamcka is excited because it's her dream project. The team also managed to bring back Roger Craig Smith to reprise his role as Crane. Currently, her goal is to “focus on this and soak up every moment.” Meanwhile, the rest of Techland is just as excited, despite initial jitters and reported “frustration” over nerves about the game's scope and future.
That said, those nerves are gone and The Beast seems to be in full swing. While it doesn't have a release date, or even a release window, it's probably safe for gamers to trust Techland based on these comments.
