Eidos Montreal is completely dependent on outsourced projects from Microsoft

A number of senior developers were let go from Eidos Montreal, the studio behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Tomb Raider (2013) and its sequels, and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. This is the second round of layoffs the studio has faced in 2025, as around 75 developers were let go in March.

Several resumes from those let go by Eidos have been released, revealing a number of canceled projects including a dark fantasy ARPG, a sci-fi stealth game, and a modern point-and-click turn-based combat game. None of these projects will see the light of day, because Eidos is focused on completing projects that are assigned to the studio by Microsoft.

The sci-fi stealth game was likely a new entry in the Deus Ex series, as Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported that the studio was working on a new Deus Ex in 2022. However, that game was eventually cancelled.

As of 2023, Eidos Montreal is working on Grounded 2 and Fable, supporting Obsidian and Playground Games on their respective projects. According to Insider Gaming's Mike Straw, further layoffs are planned at Eidos Montreal as the outsourced projects are completed.

Summaries of the released developers indicate that the contract for Fable included one hundred developers from Eidos, and Microsoft had already terminated the contract earlier this year. This may account for some of the March layoffs.

Eidos Montreal is owned by the mega holding company Embracer Group, a company that has been in a period of restructuring since 2022. This included divestitures, layoffs and reorganization of the company.

The Montreal-based studio has been looking to recreate the success of its past with recent releases. Marvel's Avengers received middling reviews, while Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was generally praised by critics. However, both of these games failed to meet the sales expectations of former parent company Square Enix. The studio has failed to release a game since being acquired by the Embracer Group.

With a plethora of canceled projects in the rearview mirror and most of the studio tasked with developing someone else's game, Eidos Montreal's future looks bleak.
