Every Xbox's console-defining game

When Microsoft launched the original Xbox in 2001, it changed the video game industry forever, and its impact is still felt more than 25 years later. Three successors eventually followed, the Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, all of which had their highs and controversies. Right now, Xbox is probably at its lowest point ever and there are even fears that Microsoft might get out of the console business sooner or later. Will there ever be a fifth console, as the rumors suggest, or will it be something entirely new, like a downloadable app on PC similar to Xbox Game Pass?

Original Xbox: Halo: Combat Evolved

The reason for Xbox's success

Halo: Combat Evolved launched with the original console, forever cementing the idea that Halo is an Xbox franchise. It wasn't just a good launch game; it redefined what first-person shooters could be on consoles and became a blueprint for them going forward. There's a reason studios tried to make “Halo Killers” back in 2000, and this game, along with its sequel, is that. The game had everything from solid controls that felt right, a story that felt epic and immersive, and a main character that, while quiet, was absolutely insane. Master Chief became iconic even though he was just one of the many super soldier marines in the space shooter.

Somehow Master Chief manages to stand out, thanks in part to his massive size, shiny green armor, and AI companion, Cortana. The Covenant's alien enemies have also become iconic, from the howls of terrified Grunts to the gibberish of the Elites. Another great thing about the game was the more open level design that allowed players to explore it on foot or in one of several vehicles. Whether players appear in the original version or enjoy the remaster as a part Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Halo: Combat Evolved holds up incredibly well as one of the best first-person shooters of all time. If it weren't for this game, it's hard to think of another Xbox original that could skyrocket on launch day.

Xbox 360: Gears Of War

Chainsaw for competition on Xbox 360

While several Halo games were released on the Xbox 360, the next generation was more about highlighting a certain cover shooter. Gears of War was the next evolution in Microsoft's shooters, set on a fictional planet called Sera with tough soldiers battling brutal enemies known as the Locust. Everyone in the game looks like they've been drinking protein shakes since they were twelve, giving them an iconic look. Another iconic item was the main guns that had the chainsaw attachments that will forever be known as Gears of War arms. Players could run up to Locusts and cut them in half with a chainsaw, and the developer, Epic Games, didn't hold back.

10 iconic Xbox 360 games that have aged like milk

Sadly, these Xbox 360 games aren't as groundbreaking today as they were at the height of their existence.

That's something that sets it apart Gears of War from Halo even more: an excess of blood and language. Aside from the rough stuff, there was also good basic cover based shooting and team tactics. Players could take cover, shoot blindly, or get a precision kill before ducking back to safety. And when running low on ammo, the active reload function replenished weapons faster. All about Gears of War was well thought out and led to a great trilogy, one great prequel for Xbox 360, a solid tactical game, a new era with two great games and the upcoming E-Day.

Gears of War finally left the Xbox console for the first time through Reloaded in 2025, allowing PlayStation fans to finally get a taste of this remarkable first entry.

Cuphead it wasn't designed by a Microsoft studio, but was set up as a console exclusive for the Xbox One and was one of the biggest games of this generation. Its effects slowly made their way into other games, including the recently released one Mouse: PI for Hire and To Nauseawhich should be in Early Access fairly soon. The developer, Studio MDHR, has yet to make a game other than DLC and newer ports Cupheadbut there have been other expansions, including a Netflix cartoon. Indie games rarely spread so quickly, but it's easy to see why this happened Cuphead. First, the visual style was remarkable.

10 Underrated Xbox 360 Games That Aged Like Fine Wine

These Xbox 360 games were surprisingly underrated, but they hold up better than some modern Xbox Series X/S games.

There are a lot of games with hand-drawn animations or cel-shading that make players think and think that it looks like a cartoon in motion. Actually, Cuphead she was on a whole new level because her inspirations go back to the 1930s. Challenge was also a factor, and it found a niche fan base that sought out punishing yet rewarding gameplay. The focus on bosses was also unique for this type of platform shooter, and all of the fights are pretty epic. It wasn't the first of its kind, but the way the bosses evolved over the rounds and the ways players could counterattack was brilliant. Cuphead may be a smaller game in scale next to something similar Hello 4but it certainly had a bigger impact.

Xbox series: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

A limited but great Xbox Series X/S exclusive

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is one of the best-timed exclusives for the current generation of Xbox. It was developed by MachineGames, which is now owned by Microsoft thanks to their overall acquisition of Bethesda. MachineGames has proven to be capable of reviving old franchises when it goes into production Wolfenstein games, starting in 2014 Wolfenstein: The New Order. in a way Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is similar because Indy also fights Nazis, though in different situations. Perhaps the best thing about the game is the dedication Indiana Jones movies.

Indy looks and sounds like Indy, thanks to Troy Baker's portrayal. It's unreal, but Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is more than just a few pretty faces and a good sound. It's all about the atmosphere this game brings to the table, like one big long movie. Exploring the crypts and city streets with Indy feels as natural as when the camera switches to a third-person perspective in some segments, such as the climbing walls. It's just as intuitive to solve a word or disc puzzle as it is to crack Indy's whip or punch some thug in the jaw. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a new benchmark in licensed games and hopefully MachineGames will be able to make a sequel one day.
