Everything new in the Omens of Tyranny update

The fight for freedom, justice and democracy is getting stronger Helldivers 2 with a brand new content update called Omens of Tyranny. Much like the Escalation of Freedom update from a few months back, which introduced a mountain of weapon changes and balances, Omens of Tyranny raises the bar with equally massive additions and exciting features.

From a new, third faction with new enemies to defeat, to drivable jeeps in brand new urban environments, the new update promises to bring everything players have been wanting for months, at least most of them. Here's everything new that's been added Helldivers 2 with the Omens of Tyranny update.

Illuminate Warp Ships may seem immune to all damage, but they have a weak spot that you can use to destroy them in Helldivers 2. Here's how.

The Illuminate Fraction

Helldivers 2 - Overseer and no vote

The biggest change with the Omens of Tyranny update is the long-rumored return of Illuminate v Helldivers 2. A highly advanced alien civilization disappeared into deep space after the events of Helldivers 1. Now they are back, serving as the third (purple) enemy faction in the ongoing galactic war against the Automatons and Terminids.

The Illuminate excel at both melee and ranged attacks. For example, guards will rush you with massive clubs that deal tons of melee damage. Combine harvesters on the other hand are like Bile titansslow moving monsters with a long laser projectile that can fry anything in its path. Illuminate also uses shield technology so you always have to deplete their shields before hacking their health bars.

It's no secret that player numbers have been plummeting in recent months. However, the arrival of Illuminate brings new content that has convinced players to return to the frontlines, as evidenced by the massive increase in players following the release of the Omens of Tyranny update.

Melee city maps

Helldivers 2 - Calypso City

Since launch, Helldivers 2 contains only maps with wide open spaces. While you often encounter abandoned facility buildings and labs, the environment is largely desolate with plenty of room to maneuver. The Omens of Tyranny update changes that by introducing an urban setting Helldivers 2which allows players to explore cities with real roads and mid-rise concrete buildings.

Now you can literally take the fight for democracy to the streets. The new focus on melee combat means you can now hide in alleyways or behind buildings, find alternate routes through the city, and most importantly, experiment with new weapons to deal with the Illuminate threat.

As the call for maps that look beyond traditional planets has finally been heard, you can also look forward to relying more on stealth to avoid unnecessary fights.

Your wish has come true. The highly sought after Master Chief inspired TR-117 Alpha Commander armor set can now be yours in Helldivers 2. Here's how.

Vehicles for transporting the entire team

Helldivers 2 - FRV Jeep

The closest to vehicles you've had so far have been the exosuit Mechs in Helldivers 2. While they can be manually piloted to wreak havoc on the battlefield, Exosuits are terrible at offering fast transport around the map.

With the release of the Omens of Tyranny update, you can now drive your own Fast Recon Vehicle (FRV) v Helldivers 2. It's a “reconnaissance and combat vehicle”, which is just a fancy name for a jeep with a bolt-on HMG turret.

The FRV can be carried by your entire team. One drives the jeep and the other mans the HMG turret in the back. The rest of the passengers can lean out and use their weapons as needed, including anti-tank weapons such as GR-8 recoilless rifleand Commando ML5-4X. We're not saying the FRV is anything like an armored tank, but your entire unit can quickly traverse the map to save precious time.

The FRV has everything but a smooth ride. Its manual transmission should probably get a few quality-of-life upgrades later on to make the vehicle easier to drive.

Melee weapons to make it personal

Helldivers 2 - Melee Spears

Another new addition to Helldivers 2 are melee weapons that can be equipped as secondary weapons. Technically, they're part of the Urban Legends Warbond, but since the Superstore started selling them as well, you can thank the Omens of Tyranny update for this one.

Currently there are only two options: Stun Lance from Urban Legends Warbond and Stun Baton from Superstore. Both have slightly different stats, oddly enough. The Stun Baton has a shorter range than the Stun Spear, but its increased attack speed and area of effect make it deadly against groups of light enemies.

It also means that it's only a matter of time before the new Helldivers 2 mod gives you lightsabers to fulfill your dream of becoming a Jedi in a galactic war.

Action emotions

Helldivers 2 - Kick Emote

The Urban Legends Warbond features a new emote called “This is Democracy” that can actually be used on enemies. Inspired by Leonidas' iconic Spartan kick from the movie 300, the emote is a stylish new way to take down enemies in Helldivers 2. You can try this on Terminid Hunters, taking about four kicks for each kill. However, be careful about accidentally using emotes on your team members.
