By now, we're all very aware of the long-running GameStop meme of trading in multiple Triple-A games only to be offered a few bucks as store credit. This obviously wasn't a case of someone essentially replacing an almost complete set of Amiibo.
That said, if you want to test drive the whole thing and then some, GameStop will be hosting a “Trade Anything Day” next month. Yes, you read that right. On December 6th, guests are invited to visit their local GameStop store to trade in anything in exchange for store credit.
“Bring Whatever Get Store Credit,” the ad reads. “Some questions.
As it turns out, there are many caveats, but also some interesting ways to interpret things. Either way, it's a pretty creative way to try to get people into the stores, especially when the holidays start and there's a lot of stuff to buy.
Let's see who is the first to bring something completely weird, but not breaking the rules
As the ever-reliable Wario64 shared on Twitter, there are plenty of caveats to what you can actually bring. That's where all of “Some Questions Asked” comes from. The full list of non-exchangeable items is as follows:
-
Exceptions include hazardous waste or material, chemicals, liquids. Lithium-ion batteries or articles containing lithium-ion batteries. Weapons and ammunition. Dead or alive animals (Taxiderm items are valid for trade). Alcohol, tobacco, drugs or medicines (legal or not). Computers (such as desktops, laptops, notebooks, all-in-ones, minis, workstations, e-readers, tablets, thin clients, smart displays, virtual reality headsets with an embedded processor, interactive flat panels with an embedded processor) except for certain MacBooks that GameStop normally accepts.
-
Computer peripherals designed for use with a computer and weighing less than 100 pounds (monitors, keyboards/keyboards, mice/pointing devices, external hard drives (except those commonly accepted by the store), fax machines, document scanners, printers, 3D printers, label printers, digital picture frames. Small electronic devices (portable digital cable players, VCRs, digital music players, VCRs, projectors, projectors) Gift vouchers and other currencies (foreign or domestic jewellery).
Final note: “Items MUST fit into our 20x20x20 measurement box” and “GameStop employees have the right to refuse any item.”
Some of these exceptions make perfect sense, such as hazardous waste, chemicals or alcohol. Perhaps most interesting is that “Taxidermy items are valid for trade.” Yeah, I'm not entirely sure how it's going to fly in the store.
It would seem that if you have something like Funkos, small toys, figures, game cases, or cables, it would be acceptable for the store, provided you are willing to part with them for an undisclosed amount of store credit.
“I'll make sure I don't work that day,” one employee wrote on the store's subreddit.
Personally, I have a lot of empty PS4, Switch, and PS5 cases that I've been wanting to get rid of, so a day like this definitely interests me. They were headed for the landfill anyway, so getting any credit is definitely a lot more convenient, and as 2025 has shown us so far, there's no shortage of video games to buy.
