Key things

  • James Gunn has announced an animated film focusing on Batman sidekicks Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
  • “Dynamic Duo” will explore the origin stories of the two Robins in a unique timeline.
  • The film will highlight the contrasting personalities of Grayson and Todd as Robin, creating potential future storylines.

James Gunn was excited to announce one of the new films greenlit by DC Studios. He also confirmed that it will be in collaboration with Warner Bros Pictures Animation.

Gunn has worked on several projects for the DC Universe, including Superman Legacy, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, The Brave and the Bold, and others. The co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios recently announced the name of the latest film project they will be working on once it is approved. It will be an animated film focusing on two of Batman's sidekicks.

The filmmaker took to X, formerly Twitter, to announce that their next film will be an animated project highlighting the two Robins in Batman space — Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. “Over the moon is excited to announce the latest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures animated film for theaters, DYNAMIC DUO, the story of Robin… or should I say Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd,” Gunn wrote. “The first feature film from a visionary Swayboxa, a blend of animation, puppetry and CGI, scripted by the amazingly talented Matt Aldrich, produced with our partners at Matt Reeves' 6th & Idaho. This is something special.” The announcement received a lot of reactions from fans eager for the project. They were very excited to see two versions of Robin on the big screen. “Robin is finally getting some love,” commented one with a fire emoji.

Shortly after Gunn's announcement, there were various speculations as to what the plot of the film would be. It seems the film will focus on the origin story of the two Robins and not their connection to Batman. It will also be separate from Matt Reeves' current projects The Batman and Penguinaccording to variety. Instead, A dynamic duo will bring Grayson and Todd in the same timeline. It will introduce them as young people who start out as friends, but whose opinions clash, which may affect their future. In DC Comics, although Grayson and Todd both served as Batman's sidekicks, they did so in different timelines. Grayson also became the superhero Nightwing, while Todd turned into the anti-hero Red Hood. The outlet also revealed claims that the two Robins would start off as a pair of robbers in the film.

A dynamic duo is a promising story that could potentially open up more stories Batman's famous helpers. In the comics, Grayson and Todd did not appear in the same timeline. Grayson, the original Robin, remained Batman's loyal sidekick from his debut in 1940 until he became Nightwing in 1984. Meanwhile, Todd took over his position as Batman's sidekick in 1983 until his death in 1988 at the hands of the Joker. The supervillain beat him to near death, throwing explosives and leaving him to die in the explosion. Batman arrived too late to find Todd dead. However, he was resurrected when Superboy broke through a reality-altering wall from the paradise dimension. Talia used the Lazarus Pit to help Todd regain his strength and memory. Feeling betrayed that Batman did not kill the Joker to avenge his death, Todd adopted a new persona – the Red Hood.

Gunn's A dynamic duo is very interesting, not only because this time the film highlights the two Robins in the game Batman universe, but rather because fans will see Todd and Grayson side by side traveling the same path before going their separate ways. Grayson and Todd represent different approaches to being Robin, with the former symbolizing the upbeat and loyal sidekick and the latter embodying a darker, more rebellious character. This is definitely something to watch.
