League of Legends will return the popular winter map this year

If there's one thing the Christmas season brings in addition to lots of cheer, treats, and hopefully deep discounts on your favorite games, it's Christmas twists on all your favorite video games.

Whether it's a gift from Santa Claus himself in Stardew Valley or seeing a zombie Santa and his fleet of Vermin fly through the skies in Nuketown, there's a lot to love about the holidays and gaming. For years, these celebrations have also included League of Legends and its popular winter map. However, this has not been the case for the past seven years.

Well, that will change this holiday season as the Winter Map is set to return.

The winter map is equal parts nostalgic and festive

In a new video shared on YouTube titled “Important Message from Pabro,” League of Legends Executive Producer Paul “Pabro” Belleza shared that the Winter Map is returning via the 25.23 patch.

“We know a lot of you have been asking about the Winter Map and why we couldn't do it,” Belleza said. “And let me tell you, it's really hard. Our technology and tools need some work. Painting everything by hand and the map itself is a lot of effort. Not to mention keeping the game clean. …

“Since you really asked for it, we're going to do it anyway. The winter map is coming back, everyone. … It's cold everywhere in Summoner's Rift.”

The video ended with a sneak peek at some of the holiday themed items. Oh, and it's worth noting that Belleza's entire monologue took place while he was making snow angels, which is a pretty neat touch.

Already on the LoL subreddit, fans have started celebrating the news of the long-awaited return. “Idgaf if it's cheesy to say but this got me a little emotional from the nostalgia of that day,” read one of the top comments. Yes, we are there with you. Welcome back Winter Map, we missed you.
