LEGOAccording to a recent report from a trusted source, the upcoming Rayquaza set will reportedly be significantly smaller than initial leaks suggested. Although earlier claims about its overall size are still believed to be correct, new information suggests that the model may represent another case of the brick-built base dominating the LEGO set piece count.
Danish toy manufacturer license Pokemon The line is still in its early days, with its first products originally slated for late February 2026. Even so, the theme is already starting to split between display models and interactive playsets. The newly revealed second wave of LEGO Pokemon bucks this trend, focusing on the company's emerging Smart Play platform rather than traditional brick-built models. While fan favorites like Pikachu and Charizard are featured in both types of sets, popular legends are expected to follow soon. One such model, the Rayquaza dimensional set, believed to be in the four-digit number of pieces, has been mentioned in numerous leaks dating back to early 2026.

The LEGO Rayquaza set is rumored to feature a large sky pillar at the expense of pokemon size
According to a new report from the Brick Tap community, a “large amount” of the 1,083-piece Rayquaza set will reportedly be used to build the top of the Sky Pillar and the surrounding clouds that act as a display stand. The source also reiterated recent leaks about the first LEGO Pokemon Rayquaza set, stating that the model will include a Zinnia minifigure with a printed Mega Stone accessory, but will not include an alternate Mega Rayquaza build. This context changes the way an earlier leak can be interpreted. The 1083 piece count initially made the model sound like a fairly substantial standalone Rayquaza build, but the reported Sky Pillar build suggests that Pokemon itself could be much more modest once the base is taken into account.
Rumor has it that 72168 Rayquaza won't be the company's first recent set to feature a display structure as a significant part of the build. Earlier this year, the LEGO Icons 11389 Project Hail Mary similarly devoted a significant portion of its parts to the stand needed to display the spacecraft in flight, making the base the centerpiece of the finished model rather than a minor accessory.
Several other recent and upcoming LEGO sets follow a similar design approach. The 42221 NASA Artemis Space Launch System, 72152 Pikachu and Poke Ball, 76968 Dinosaur Fossils: Tyrannosaurus rex, 21350 Jaws and (to a lesser extent) 10331 Kingfisher Bird models all rely on extensive stands, scenery or environmental bases.

LEGO collectors have long been divided into sets with elaborate stands. Some fans see such builds as annoying and frustrating, and assume they can feel like filler when the main model is smaller than expected. Others argue that large racks can work well and see them as another avenue for creative expression. Where the rumored 72168 Rayquaza falls on that spectrum should become clear soon, as the oft-leaked set is set to launch on August 1st.
