Chip's selflessness is shown at the very end of the game during the battle with Perfect Gaia, when Sonic's brave companion decides to sacrifice himself, saving both the planet and Sonic. Despite being a young girl at the end of her life, Maria shows an ever-increasing interest in Shadow, and is ultimately the only character in the franchise who actually manages to reach out to him with kind words of support.
This is quite ironic considering Shadow was essentially created as part of an experiment as the “ultimate life form”, made out of Gerald's hopes of creating a cure for his daughter. Unfortunately for Eggman, who would probably try to bond with the naive fox, Tails is more concerned with creating new things to help Sonic take on the new batch of villains, and is always there to support his best friend whenever needed. .
There have been subtle implications throughout the series that Tails may be secretly envious of Sonic and his ability to destroy world-ending threats. Instead of being jealous, however, Tails decides to prove his worth by assisting Sonic in his adventures and never hesitates to put himself in danger if it means getting one step closer to world peace.
