New Borderlands Shadow Dropped game

This article was updated by Andrea Trama on April 11, 2026, with reference to the game's availability in Canada and other regions and other new details. It was first published on April 9.

New Border the game just dropped a shadow, but it is only available on iOS. The last major title in the cult looter shooter series hasn't been out for a year yet, but fans have been treated to some surprising news, albeit on a smaller scale than previous games. Without a trailer, Border now has its first mobile game.

Things have been up and down for Border franchise recently. After some pre-release controversy but a very successful launch, Borderlands 4 lost 93% of its Steam players in just two months. Since then, Gearbox has released several patches, a new vault hunter, and a promise to keep adding and optimizing the game to a higher standard over time. It turns out that the series is getting something more than just a supplement Borderlands 4 content this year as well, although the latest release probably isn't what anyone expected.

Borderlands 4's Story Pack 1 DLC isn't getting many fans, with most criticizing the lack of content for the price.

Borderlands Mobile is now available on iOS

On April 9, fans noticed Borderlands Mobile appeared on the Apple App Store, with no announcement from Gearbox or Take-Two. According to the store's page, the app was developed by Zynga, the mobile gaming company Take-Two acquired for $12.7 billion in 2022, and brings Border' “signature chaos, art style and gunfire” to players' phones. Gameplay follows the classics to a large extent Border formula, just with shorter missions and smaller-scale battles, though there are still plenty of enemies to shoot and loot to collect. It's only available on iOS for now, and it's unclear if it's coming to Android, plus it's free, which is worth noting after Borderlands 4price controversy.

Based on recent information, Borderlands Mobile is a time-limited test and will launch under a different name for other users and platforms in the future. So far, the game appears to be available only on iOS and in the United States, with the exception of Canada and other regions. Since this is a test and the only character available is Siren, be warned that your progress may be wiped.

While the game may not live up to the scale of its predecessors, some have pointed this out Borderlands Mobile appears to be more complete in terms of content than the last main game, with seven game modes already available and plenty more coming soon. For now, there is only one vault hunter class available, the Summoner, but three more, labeled Exo-Tank, Outrider, and Assassin, will be added to the lineup. As one would expect from a free-to-play mobile game, there will also be a battle pass, although it's unclear how much it will cost and what it might entail.

Despite the lack of fanfare surrounding its launch, Borderlands Mobile i feel like they are trying to appeal to longtime fans. It's full of classic enemies like skags and bandits and even bosses. It also pays tribute to one of the Borderlands 3's best side quests by bringing back Circles of Slaughter. Only time will tell how successful it will be, as the app is still so new that it doesn't have enough reviews to give it an average rating, but there seems to be a lot for players to enjoy, especially for a free experience.

A mobile spin-off might not be exactly what Border fans would expect it, but it could be a pleasant surprise. Other video game franchises like Pokemon and Call of Duty have successfully penetrated the mobile space, so there's a chance Take-Two's heist shooter could do the same. Of course, we can't say for sure until more people dive into the game and Zynga adds more of their promised content. If nothing else, the app could give fans something to help them out Borderlands 4 will get more DLC and optimizations.
